    I think it's different staying home from school when you aren't allowed to see your friends. Isn't that the real reason kids want to go to school? Lots of cool videos this week, thanks for sharing!

    I would agree with Tammy, I think kids probably miss the social aspects of school more than the classes!

    I think kids are desperate for normalcy these days! Tokyo is fascinating but I wonder if in real life I'd find it overwhelming. It's all academic at this point because it's not like I'm traveling but it does make me wonder. Have a great week!

    My sister is a high school teacher, and she has had a lot of kids reach out to her saying they would love to go back to school. You know what they say, you don't realize what you have until it's gone. School is not just about learning, it's very social for the kids. I remember when one of our student's died during track practice. The kids all came to school just to be together.

    It dawned on my daughter a couple of weeks ago how good she has it doing virtual learning this year. At least in terms of less class time and being able to roll out of bed and into the classroom if she wanted (she always gets up for breakfast first, but it's a close call some mornings). I'm not sure the pros out weight the cons even for her because she really misses being with her friends and the hands on learning experience being in class offers though. It's been such a rough year. I'm so proud of her.

    I don't know about others, but my kids absolutely wanted to go back, and their friends as well. At the bus stop, all the parents were
    completely stupefied at how excited our children were at going to school, because like the original author of the tweet, we thought WTF since when did kids enjoy school?! Still, even my daughter, who prefers virtual schooling, came home after the first day of return to classes and said she wishes she was going all five days (they are hybrid at the moment).

    As for whether it's just the social aspect they miss, I think it depends. My kids are in elementary so the their curriculum is still easy and fun, so they definitely have a love for learning and it's not just about seeing their friends. Middle school and high school might be another story though, as I hated school at that age too lol.

    My two kids have done remote learning all year, and neither one wants to go back to school, like ever. They're already asking if remote will be an option next fall. Oh, no! I'm sooo hoping we're closer to "normal" then with widespread vaccine distribution.

    I never wanted to go to school either! Remote learning would've been a dream for me, but who knows, maybe I'd have felt different after a year at home. I kind of doubt it. I was a sort of a loner and didn't feel like I fit in much back then.

    I hated being at school in general but after the summer holidays, I would rush to get back to see my friends. Of course it wore off within a few days and I would long for staying home again. Maybe that is what's happening.

    School is definitely a social thing. MY daughter is looking forward to all the rest of the kids coming back, and the teachers being able to move away from behind the laptop where they have been coordinating the remote learning for the rest of the class. Hopefully this will be the last time.

    Ooo I have been enjoying that Orient Express ambience video too, Greg! I also love the sleep story about a trip on the Orient Express which is on the Calm app. 😍 Also that is an interesting tweet, but from my own experience working in a school all of our kids have been so pleased to be back, even those who were reluctant before! 😅 Take care and happy reading in the coming week. 🙂

    I love the pics this week - the Frozen Coffee one is stunning... I know my grandson, who has been back at school for some time, has loved it. And the younger one is very much looking forward to returning, even though he's had some problems with his friendships. He dislikes distance learning as he's found it boring and unchallenging.

    I don't know, but probably, remote learning can be stressful as well...at least for the younger ones. Not to mention their parents LOL.

    I think I would have been thrilled to have to stay home but stay home and do what I want. These kids have to stay home and do nothing. I can see where that might change how they view school - that's where there friends usually are 5 days a week. I wonder if they'll continue that desperation to go back to school once they're actually back lol! Happy reading!

    Cool videos, and I think the isolation from friends and others is the biggest thing for these kids...and the adults, too!

    My son loved going to school, except for grades 6 and 7, in elementary school he used to get mad when he was sick and couldn't go to school. Ha ha. 😊

    My college son would prefer in person as it is easier for him to focus in person since he has ADHD. My middle son pefers remote and my daughter misses the extracurriculars but perfers rolling out of bed and being in class vrs. getting up early and going- her school is hybrid. When I was a kid I would have prefered to go to middle school remotely. Middle school is the worst! :-) Have a great week!

    I was one of those weird kids who actually loved school. Please don't ban me! And I have a number of students who also really love school....

    I am a huge nerd and I love school! That being said, I understand that there are kids out there who would prefer to stay online for the rest of the their schooling given their personal preferences and individual circumstances. Great post, Greg! I hope you have a great week ahead :)

    I think it really depends on the kids. The ones who miss their friends probably want to go back. So do the ones who enjoy learning new things in a group. Oh the other hand, the ones who have been bullied, who feel they don't fit in, who are very introverted, who have sensory processing issues, who are highly distractable -- many of those kids are finding it easier, less stressful, and more enjoyable to learn at home. I hope that options can be found for the ones for whom going back to school means more stress, not less.

    We were fortunate that when our child began to find school more stressful (to the point of coming home in tears), we were able to switch to homeschooling. That made a huge difference. So did finding a college where class sizes were kept small. Now Robin is enjoying working from home, and hoping to be able to work from home at least part of the week once things open up again.

    That Green Star Saga book reminds me of the old school 80s/90s fantasy books that got me into writing my first books. I love those classics!

    I think my grandson wants to go back to school to see his friends. But even though they are letting kids go back to school here soon they have to wear a mask all day and stay 6 feet from each other. I don't think the kids will like that.

    Kids are getting depressed from not having interaction with other kids, if that means going to school then I am sure they want too. It's one thing to want to play hooky or have a snow day but to never get to go is hard, especially if that is the only way they can see their friends. :(

    My daughter has had a relatively normal school year this year, which makes that tuition check I wrote absolutely worth every penny--the local public high schools have been doing 2 days a week in school, three virtual. Having spent a month working from home, I know I prefer in person.

    That tweet is interesting. I think if I was in grade school, I'd want to be at school - because I never wanted to miss. In high school I had a lot of anxiety, so I might have liked being home for the most part (minus not being able to see friends).

    School was something I was good at but didn't particularly enjoy. I think kids who are social and enjoy hanging with friends miss it more than kids who are more introverted. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

    Ha about school! Kids do get bored at home after awhile. Always keen to go back after the long summer break. But then... they weary after the slog sets in. I was a teacher all my life and I felt much the same!!

    The school thing made me laugh. Out here it's been a constant drumbeat of everyone (kids and parents) wanting school to start up again. Now they did and it's a constant chorus of we don't want to go back for dozens of different reasons.

    I honestly think I would rather have stayed home but I was very shy as a kid and worked better when I could do it on my own. But I'm sure everyone has their limits being away from everything and, of course, parents need to deal with the issues it brings up as well.

    I will say that, given the choice, neither of my kids want to go back to school. My daughter just has a lot of anxiety of Covid (otherwise she loves school), and I get that. My son just thinks it is easier not to be at school, but I think his social skills are really suffering with distance learning. - Melinda @ A Web of Stories

    That school tweet made me laugh. At first my kid was screaming to go back but now he has no interest in it until, as he says, things go back to normal. Apparently his friends who did return to in-person learning hate everything about it.

    I hated every minute of every day of school so home / virtual school would've been perfect for me. I wasn't involved in any social stuff...sports...clubs...ugh. I would've been fine just seeing my friends after school and on weekends.
