I think a lot of us breathed a sigh of relief this week. For me, it's more about competence than ideology. Environmental issues are big for me, I almost went into environmental law, so to see the carnage wreaked there the last four years was difficult. In other news, I'm reading a fun retro book for Vintage SF Month. And several people have asked about the Bookish Games.
The Games are where you have two (or more) sides- Town and Mafia. And whatever factions there are in addition. Mafia tries to kill the Townies during the Night, and Town tries to identify the mafia (and kill 'em) during the Day. Games last weeks and you can find the latest chaos here.

Not sure who's seen this, but a disturbing look at the Capitol riot.
Those are some really neat art pieces this week! Different from the usual cyberpunk, but I like it! I'm not sure what I'm looking at in Dark Metal, but at first I thought it was like a train barreling down on the woman. Very cool imagery, regardless.

I remember Asia's covers! The pyramid shape was a recurring symbol, wasn't it?

ReplyDeleteI also felt like I was able to take a breath this week. The past four years have been taxing, but I am hopeful that the next four will be better if we continue to be active citizens (and vote!). Environmental law sounds really interesting -- I have recently been wondering whether a career in law is something that I might want to do after college, and I would be curious to learn more about what drew you to that field.

I love those, like a gentle, almost romantic cyberpunk. It was wonderful seeing the changeover this week and for Americans to finally breathe that sigh of relief. I'm hoping this will be the beginning of all conservative governments around the world being voted out, including Australia.

ReplyDeleteI just hope as a country you don't repeat the same mistake in 2024 that you did in 2016. Trump still has a huge following there it seems. Despite (or possibly because of) the last four years. Really nice art this week, I especially like the one with the cat.

The environment is a big thing for me too, and it felt like there were about a million steps back the last four years. It's been upsetting when they know the damage they're doing and they just don't care if it means money. Penguins! So cute!
ReplyDeleteWhat a sigh of relief on Wednesday. I have so much hope of better things and of the damage of the last 4 years being undone. Seeing Biden rejoin the Paris Agreement was a great start.

ReplyDeleteI'm so pleased for the US and hope you'll see lots of improvements soon. I'm right there with you on the environmental issues. The UK is a mess and I would love to see a different government in charge here.

I may not be American but I understand that the new president is a big turning point for a lot of things (hopefully). Hoping things will look up from here on out! And I also really like listening to nature sounds from time to time.
ReplyDeleteWatching the footage of the invasion is frightening. Thank you for leavening it with that delightful video of the penguines:). Yes... the environment is taking a hammering - and starting to hammer back. We have had floods this week in the north, to the extent that it simply doesn't make headlines the way it used to. And the wildfires raging around the world look horrible. Despite all of that, Greg - I hope the coming week is a peaceful one.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you almost went into environmental law? When tRump trolls were spamming Bernie's page on Facebook, during the primaries, I used to go to their profiles trying to see what made them tick, and one thing that seemed a common thread whether working poor, middle class, or rich was nature activities: fishing, camping, hiking, kayaking, etc... and I could never understand where the disconnect came from. Especially when they had photos of doing these activities with kids and grandkids. How did they not care he was destroying the environment? 😐

ReplyDeleteOh wow, so cool that you considered environmental law! I feel like that would be a deeply frustrating career though, considering how things have gone down. I am containing myself and not responding directly at the people who say they hope the years go by "without much damage", like ma'am did you miss the pandemic that killed hundreds of thousands of people? The riots that killed a few more? The racism (and yes, again, killing) that ran around not only unchecked but encouraged by so-called "leaders"? Cool, cool, you're worried about... the man who wants people to NOT DIE? Wants us to not have actual Praimfaya? Wants people to be treated fairly and equally? Wow, what a monster 🙄

ReplyDeleteOh yeah, very huge sigh of relief on Wednesday. I'm pretty sure it was the happiest I've been in 4 years, lol. I also agree with your environmental concerns and hope that fixing what Trump did is one of Biden's top priorities.
ReplyDeleteI was just reading that New Yorker article about the Capitol riots right before your post! I didn't watch much video from that day, so it was strange to see the events the reporter wrote about enacted in front of my eyes. It's still so unbelievable!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about today's Top Ten Tuesday topic either. I don't keep good reading stats, so although I'm sure I read several books by authors who were new to me in 2020, I don't know if I want to spend the time researching and posting about them!

ReplyDeleteI felt like a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders as soon as Biden and Kamala were sworn in. I didn't even realize how stressed out I'd been until our "leadership" finally changed.

"Dark Metal II" looks like a cross between Star Wars (Leia with Jabba) and The Matrix.
