The big news this week is that my cousin probably has coronavirus. I tweeted about it earlier in the week but basically she woke up on fire- her description- but her extremities were freezing and her heart rate was in the 130's. She's a nurse in U of M health and couldn't even get a test! Spent hours on hold. Said after a few hours she felt better but it felt like her immune system was at war with her body. It was kicking her ass- again her words. And she's young and healthy. I think she's better now- I haven't talked to her in a couple days, she's on the other side of the state- but yeah it's hit close to home.
In other news I found out this week that one of my favorite bookstores- Horizon Books in Traverse City- is closing sometime this year. And this news came out before coronavirus hit, so who knows if the downturn will move things along? I can't stress enough what a big deal Horizon is in Traverse- this is like a gut punch.
Lovely week! Oh. Do you remember K-mart? Well, I found THIS. Seriously- someone uploaded a bunch of the in- store music and announcements that were played in the stores in the 80's. Yes, this is as awesome as it sounds. I listened to the 1989 one as I was doing other stuff and wow.

Last week on Tuesday's Top Ten list I mentioned Lost Horizon as on my TBR and someone said they wouldn't mind reading it if I did a read-along. So... is anyone else interested in a Lost Horizon read-along? If anyone wants to I'll set it up and keep it super simple- I'll do a reading schedule and a few discussion posts, people can do whatever and it'll be fun?

Scary to hear about your cousin! But whether or not it is corona, I'm glad it sounds like she's pulled through and is doing better. And sad to hear about your bookstore, I think I read about it in a newsletter that I get which mentions any closures of bookstores around the country...happening more and more lately, it hurts to say.

I'm so sorry about your cousin Greg. What a worrying time this is for people and sadly we are going to hear more people we know having to see the virus attack their family and friends. I hope she recovers soon but how crazy is it that she can't get tested??? It's the same in the UK-not enough testing kits for NHS staff. It's sickening. Healthcare workers and emergency services MUST be priority for testing!
ReplyDeleteUgh, what happened to your cousin is awful. I hope she has a speedy recovery. I think there needs to be a serious improvement in the testing system. How is it that every celebrity can get tested without showing symptoms but healthcare workers can’t?

ReplyDeleteThat really is close to home, Greg. I hope she continues to do better. I can't imagine how scary it is for all the medical professionals. And how sad about the bookstore. :( OMG the Peanuts gang doing Barracuda is just everything. Love it.
ReplyDeleteDid you notice that Lucy in the Barracuda video dances like Elaine from Seinfeld? Just saying... I forgot that Martha Stewart had a line at KMart. That was way back in the day. We still have one near me, by the way. Thoughts and prayers going out to your cousin. I hope she gets better quickly, and am grateful that she put herself at risk to help others.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about your cousin. I hope she starts feeling better soon. My daughter and her husband have both been exposed and are both not feeling well but so far the symptoms aren't exactly lining up for the virus and they don't seem to be getting worse. Love that about the KMart music and I love the last two pictures. I would definitely not mind spending time in either of those houses!

ReplyDeleteJeez! That's ridiculous that your cousin can't get a test, but not surprising. I hope she gets tested and is able to collect Workers Comp because it's probably on the job where she got the virus in the first place! Best wishes for a speedy recover!

She's a nurse and couldn't even get a test?! She's part of the front lines during this crisis! She should be tested! I'm furious, sad, and baffled reading this... I hope she gets tested because this a serious virus for f's sake. Here's also hoping that whatever she's feeling isn't serious and she's able to fully recover soon.. this is scary.

I hope you're cousin will be ok. It's a bit complicated in France... Since monday I work at home but still go outside for the dog. Many don't listen so it's complicated.
ReplyDeleteOMG, that had to be so scary to hear about someone close to you feeling sick, and the pain she must have been feeling sounds horrible. I pray that she is doing much better these days. My son works at Ford, and they've closed down all 8 plants because several of the employees have it in various locations across the country. I remember KMart from back in the day, but I don't remember any of that music, Gorgeous Greg!(lol) My son laughs because I actually DO still have a few of those cassettes still hanging around and the tape recorder to go with it.(lol) Hugs and stay safe. ReplyDeleteI vaguely remember Kmarts. There used to be one in the city but I don't recall ever going shopping there. However, I do remember shopping many times at a Place's discount store when I was kid.

Yes... we're in the same situation here - but while it is all shades of wrong, I'm frankly glad that trying to keep up with such a fast-moving, scary situation isn't resting upon my shoulders! ReplyDeleteI really hope your cousin is able to fight off the virus. Lack of testing is an issue worldwide but the US seems to be even more under resourced than some so called third world countries.

I feel kind of the same and my shop here has only closed its doors until further notice but keeps going its online shop. So I still get what I need. Are we following each other on Twitter? ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your cousin, hope she is doing fine. You might be the first person I actually know who knows someone who had the virus! Our state has finally shut us down so no more going to Hardees for coffee with friends as we had still been doing that but they are shutting lobbies down starting tomorrow. So now boredom will set in. Staying at home doesn't bother me it's being told I have to, how far with the government go? More afraid of government than virus.

That K-Mart thing is cool. I don’t remember 80s K-Mart, but I was there a lot in the 90s. Hopefully your cousin is okay. That’s stressful, especially if she can’t get tested. I hope you have a good week!

Oh I hope your cousin is okay. I have heard that for some people its like the flu on steroids. No thank you!! I was super miserable when I got the flu a few years ago and am not looking forward to having a steroid flu! Love the peanuts singing videos! So great!

One night Mr. Barb and I got lost on YouTube watching a ton of them. Such an incredible time-suck but man, it's so needed right now right?

Greg stay well. The medical staff are so important and so much at the coal face. With the book blogging community the world feels connected in some way. We go into total lockdown Weds midnight. I so hope it works, its saying health first, economy second I guess but we can pull together into the months ahead. Take care.

I hope you cousin has a speedy recovery. I've been sick all week, and was getting worried myself, but was relieved when the doctor said I have Bronchitis. It is such a scary time right now. I hope by some miracle this will all pass real quickly. Listened to the KMart Tape. I didn't realize Martha Stewart was already popular back then.

ReplyDeleteI was gutted when our indie bookstore folded. They were the best place to pick up last minute gifts. We have no bookstore in town now. I would even settle for a B&N at this point. The closest one is a 20+ minute bus ride with two transfers away. 😑 I'm sorry you are losing your favorite store. 😕
I loved the Stranger Things cover. I saved it on YouTube to play guitar over. I need to sit down and figure out how to use my camera for videos and sync audio from my modeling amp interface to the computer. I have wanted to do a progress video for a year now. 😛

I would say that I hope this week will be better but I fear better weeks are some time away! So, instead, I'll say I hope you and your family are okay!
