Somewhere beyond the stars an unknown enemy lay in wait for the starship Polaris!

This week is Top Ten Tropes. Ooh fun topic. My first thought was that this had been done a lot, but then again maybe not in a while? And I always like to talk about favorite tropes.
Generation ship
Epic fantasy but character driven. Not sure that's a trope, but I care more about where the chars end up than I do the larger plotline.
Evil parents, or parents who are problematic but redeemable
Time travel
Alternate dimensions/ timelines
Cloning
Dystopia
I love a good memory loss tale
Post apocalyptic
Ooh, yes! Too all of these tropes!
ReplyDeleteGotta' love a good time travel story! Though to be honest, I haven't really read many in the genre. It's a fun plot device on screen, though! :)
ReplyDeleteOh I love this and I agree about an epic fantasy that is character driven. I see most people seem to not love that but I think it's the most important part.

Time travel is always so interesting. And yes to found family!
ReplyDeleteI seem to prefer the character driven side of epic fantasy like LOTR and Game of Thrones. I don't read much fantasy but this is the kind I do better with.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely here for character driven fantasy - or urban fantasy I think. I tried so hard to like Here and Now and Then but I just couldn't get into it!
ReplyDeleteGeneration ships are always interesting to read about for sure.
ReplyDeleteMy TTT
I love found family storylines.💟
ReplyDeleteYes to memory loss, and definitely time travel! I will pretty much read anything that deals with time travel. I don't understand it most of the time, but it's still fascinating!
ReplyDeleteGreat list! I totally agree with you on character-driven epic fantasy. By all means give me an epic plot, but I want the characters to be at the centre of everything.
ReplyDeleteI'll go for time travel, post apocalyptic, and dystopian too!
ReplyDeleteLove your list, Greg! I also had multiverses on my list -- who doesn't love a good multiverse/parallel universe?! Definitely love a good epic fantasy and dystopia too. Still need to read Wilder Girls 😍
ReplyDeleteMy TTT post
Great list. You know I love seeing Wolves of Winter because I think it was highly underappreciated. I love ragtag crews as well and now you have me longing to watch Guardians of the Galaxy again - every ragtag crews needs a raccoon!
ReplyDeleteNot sure if character driven fantasies are a trope or not, but they are one of my favorite things to read! Also, alternate timelines are another favorite. Love Harry Turtledove for that reason.
ReplyDeleteHere is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
I'm glad you enjoy all of these tropes! There are certainly many books containing them!
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I love found families! My TTT
ReplyDeleteHuh. I never thought to deviate from romance tropes so, well done, you. :)
ReplyDeleteFound families are my favorites, too.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you! Love a found family trope because it's so much fun to see people finding their people, you know? And who doesn't appreciate a good amnesia storyline?
ReplyDeleteSo many good ones! I love the found family/ragtag crew one the most, but I'm also in dire need of some more time travel and memory loss books.
ReplyDeleteI do like found families and a good enemies to more story.
ReplyDeleteKaren @ For What It's Worth
Memory loss is always fun especially when they get their memories back and learn they've been lied to.
ReplyDeleteAll great tropes with many stories using them.
ReplyDeleteI love the found families trope and would like to see more of these books.
ReplyDeleteYou already know I love dystopian and post-apocalyptic reads. But ragtag crews! That's a good one. Wish I'd thought of it. :D
ReplyDeleteAhh yes, the memory loss tale is always fun. I also like the ragtag crews becoming friends.
ReplyDeleteFound families is one of my favorites too.
ReplyDeleteA million times yes to found families, and I have seen some books with envy worthy squads.
ReplyDeleteI love dystopian and post apocalyptic books! I'm always on the lookout for more of them!
ReplyDeleteI am a big fan of time travel stories but all of these sound really good. Great list!
ReplyDeleteGreat choices! I should have added generation ships to my list. :)
ReplyDeleteI've recently been reading a lot of Sherlock variations and Jack the Ripper variations/tropes.
ReplyDeleteYes to time travel, alternative dimensions, Dystopian, and Post Apocalyptic tropes!!! These are all such fun themes in sci-fi/fantasy that I have enjoyed immensely! Great list Greg :)
ReplyDeleteLindy@ A Bookish Escape
Wow, we have a lot in common! I love dystopias, time travel, parallel universes, amnesia, apocalypse, found families. Bring on all the sci-fi tropes!
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
From all these above my favorite is found family or like you've said ragtag crew!!!
ReplyDeleteAlternate dimensions and time travel are my kryptonite - second only to afterlife stories (as in, ghosts, dead/undead characters - and I don't mean zombies! - characters being brought back, but mainly pure afterlife scenarios). Amnesia has been used and abused, but there's still space for well-plotted books built on that premise. The key is being able to put a fresh spin on any trope!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check Here and Now and Dark Matter!
Found families/ ragtag crews make for awesome adventures in dystopian societies! Great list!
ReplyDeleteTime travel is almost always a hit with me.
ReplyDeleteGreat list! I like all these tropes as well! I really need to read The Long Way to a Small and Angry Planet soon!
