This week is Top Ten Unpopular Opinions related to books. This is kinda fun although it requires a little more thought than I usually put into these (okay, not really). But it actually turned out fun to put together.
I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I am not a fan of Daenerys. As a character she's fine, but the decisions she makes... have made me pretty skeptical of her. And this is from a book perspective. The way the show ended, and the creative choices they made, of course add a whole new wrinkle to that.
I tried this series and only got a hundred or so pages in to the first one, and I was kinda... bored? And I know these books are well- loved, so I feel like a bad person for not liking them. :) But... I may try down the road again?
This is another book that I DNF'd, and I'm not sure why. I should love this, based on all I've heard, but again I was kinda bored? This one I definitely want to try again though.
Okay I know I'm alone on this, but I prefer Luke/ Leia to Han/ Leia. Heresy, I know! But I have my reasons. Also this. And before you go ewww, keep in mind... the Lannisters do it! Okay maybe not a good reason. But they don't have to be siblings.

I'm not sure if I really feel the Kat/ Peeta ship? But not really Gale either? Too bad Finnick wasn't, like, available.
I like this series but Dalton doesn't really work for me. He seems to be mainly a vehicle to drop f-bombs every second.
I don't hate Bellamy and Echo together. That might be enough to get me lynched in certain quarters on Twitter- and don't get me wrong, I'm Bellarke all the way- but until they get there, I'm just saying. I mean it was sorta coming ever since they were both in a cage in season two? And yes I'm talking the show here.
You'd think I'd be all over this but I was bored to tears.

Yeah, I never really shipped any of the Hunger Games people hard. I laughed at the SW ones though - Lannisters LOL No way though - Lei and Han, come on now :P

I think I feel the Katniss/Peta ship more in the films than the books...?? But then it HAS been a while since I read the first/third novels, so...
ReplyDeleteSomeday I want to read "Six of Crows," but I haven't picked up its sequel yet just in case it isn't my kind of read. Hoping it's good. :)

Hitcher’s was a huge part of my twenties! I still love it. Not so much the later ones, but the first two are classics.
ReplyDeleteNever really got into Veronica Roth. I read the first, didn’t mind it, but didn’t like it enough to read the rest, let alone watch the movies. The sorting thing at the beginning of Divergent made me think of Harry Potter, only the Ravenclaws were the villains.
I must be one of the few who was satisfied with the ending of Hunger Games.
You have the same cover of 20,000 Leagues as I do. I bought it when I was about ten, I think. If you don’t like it, perhaps consider another one, such as Around The World In 80 Days, which is hilarious as well as exciting.

ReplyDeleteYeah I don't think I really cared for Katniss ending up with either of them. Finnick was great though lol. I still need to read the Six of Crows books, so I'll see how I feel about them when I finally do :-P
ReplyDeleteReally kicking myself for not including the Divergent trilogy in my post. At the time of writing it, it didn't occur to me. I am one of the rare people who had no issues with Allegiant. I was still upset, but not burning my copies of the books because of it!

Love your picks, Greg. I didn't ind the Insurgent movie so much. I mean, I didn't love it, but it was okay. (Confession: I never even bothered seeing Allegiant. The trailer just had me like WTH?) I was one of those Katniss/Peeta shippers but I totally would have gone the Finnick route had that been offered up! :)
ReplyDeleteThese days my attention span is about the size of a pea, so I lose interest quickly when a book doesn't grab my attention, and 20,000 Leagues was definitely one of them. It definitely was boring. You give some great reasons on why certain books didn't work, and love them. Hugs...RO

ReplyDeleteI didn't mind the Divergent film or book but curiously I never read the second or third so I wonder if I didn't like the first as much as I thought?
Hunger Games - i loved the first book (must to my surprise) but I didn't really love the ending or the relationships.
Dany - I liked her, I guess she did make some dodgy decisions and the ending - well, it seemed too out of character somehow. But, it is what it is.

Totally agree with Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom. I basically forced myself to finish Six of Crows and never read the second book!

ReplyDeleteGreat list! You definitely shouldn't feel bad for not liking Six of Crows. It's one of my favourites, but the world would be so boring if we all liked exactly the same books! I didn't like Katniss with Peeta either - I wanted her to end up alone.
ReplyDeleteThere are many fantasy type books that I don't like that many others do. That is why I stayed away from The Crooked Kingdom series. I agree with you on the Katniss love triangle ending. Why did she have to end up with anyone?
ReplyDeleteGreat list! Several people haven't been feeling that Katniss/Peeta relationship, including one of our reviewers at Long and Short Reviews. I thought they were okay, but I agree it would have been interesting to have Finnick around! Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteI didn't really ship Katniss with anyone either. Katniss and Peeta was "cute", but not romantic and they didn't really HAVE to end up together. Gale also wasn't a good fit, but I do agree that Finnick would have been a good choice. I hadn't thought of that before.

I watched the Divergent film recently and it was decent. I can't recall how close it was to the book as I read it many years ago. I haven't seen Insurgent. I like Dany in the books and TV series up till the start of season seven when her bad side became more noticeable! I didn't finish Six of Crows or 20000 Leagues as I found both dull!

I'm not a Daenerys fan, either! She was OK in the first 2 ASoIaF books, but by the time I got to A Dance with Dragons, I had to skim some of her chapters. Probably missed some important stuff there, lol. Where the show went with her character- yikes. Still not over that mess.
ReplyDeleteI personally never read Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy so I can't relate, but it makes me not want to read it. I barely remember the movie if I'm honest. I love this!

ReplyDeleteI hear you on the Hunger Games, the romance was so bad, regardless of who it was. It could have been so much better. Even the movies lacked that connection that really needed to be there.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Lost City, Dalton does get better! Even his mouth does (sort of) but yeah, he is a bit gruff but oddly he really does fit Casey some how.
Honestly the further we get from the conclusion of The Hunger Games, the more I think it might have been better if Katniss ended up on her own.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Insurgent as well! No, it was not perfect, but it expanded the story and I loved it. I have not read SOC but it's on my list after The Grisha Trilogy. I giggled at the Luke Leia/ Lanisters reference. I've seen all the movies but don't really have a preference. Back when I was younger reading THG I loved Katniss and Peta, but as I grow older, I feel you on not shipping them. I'm with you on Hitchhiker's Guide! I kept reading it because I thought maybe it'd appeal to me more by the end, but I found it just okay. I totally get the humor and appeal, but I guess it just didn't quite hit it off for me. 20,000 Leagues is definitely not as exciting as it should be based on the concept, haha. Great list!
ReplyDeleteNot thought about it before, but yep, I could've invested in Katniss and Finnick! Peeta and Gale were both very intense (like her) Finnick might have balanced her out a bit.

ReplyDeleteHave you watched any of the movies of Hitchhiker's Guide? If so don't worry about the book. Adams was a screenwriter and his books read a bit like that. I've heard some of his other books have a bit more substance so maybe try one of those? I love Hitchhiker's but I can see where you could be a bit meh. I really thought the whole romance angle in Hunger Games was unnecessary. I mean they were fighting to the death - wasn't that enough?
ReplyDeleteOkay you just viciously attacked my two favorite ships ever, Bellarke and Katniss and Peeta so idk what is even left to say. And while I like both Bellamy and Echo, Becho itself is like actual cousins kissing. Blech. OH that is why people call it Blecho! I am slow hah.
ReplyDeleteOkay but you have to admit, the 3rd Divergent movie was SO horrible, that it was actually... funny? Amusing? Idk. And I was a little bored during SoC too, oops?
I'm not a big fan of Dani either. I liked her well enough early on in the series, but the longer it went on, the more I found myself questioning her. I don't hate Bellamy/Echo either, although I definitely prefer Bellarke.

You know what? I loved The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy when I read it in my 30s, but I tried a re-read a couple of years ago because I was going to read the second book, and I was bored! Ha ha. I had already bought the Dirk Gently ebook bundle, and I'm hoping I will like it. 😜

ReplyDeleteI think my unpopular bookish opinion on GoT is that I'll never read the books. Don't care to.
I don't mind Katniss and Peeta but I dislike the actor they chose for him in the movies... And I agree it's a shame Finnick wasn't available. Katniss and Finnick would have been quite the pair.
You know I actually liked the movie version of Insurgent as well even though it was incredibly different. Maybe it was Miles Teller, he's good at what he does.

I had to restart Crooked Kingdom I think twice before I finally immersed into it. the story is tough going early one, but once it starts to make sense and hits its stride, its really good. I agree about Dalton, he is hit or miss for me.
ReplyDeleteI am not a fan of Peeta bread at all. I was a big Finnick fan as well. Lol. And Dalton - I think his character still needs to be fleshed out somewhat. I feel like we don't know him that well. :(
