Sunday Post #303

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

So this week I was thinking about simple pleasures. I had the window open at night and the rain was falling gently down, and it occurred to me how relaxing it was. And that got me thinking about the sounds of different seasons. You know, how in the summertime you have the sound of an airplane on a lazy afternoon (who else loves that?), the crickets at night, the distinctive birdsong. The sound of boats and jet skis at a lake. Is that the best or what? And then I thought- how do sounds differ by location? Like, if you live in the topics or the desert, how are sounds different? What are your favorite sounds of summer?

The big news this week is... The Bookish Games are over! And we won! Team Red Church for the win (this was a Nevernight edition). And man, were there some twists and turns this time!

  3. I think my favorite sound of summer is when there's a light summer rain... and that's partly because then, it also smells really good.
    Have a wonderful weekend, Greg!

    1. I agree... and I love hearing the rain coming down! :)

  4. I think birdsong is the most distinctive sound here in California, we even have annoying mockingbirds that chirp in the middle of the night!

    1. Really? That's funny... well, not funny in the middle of the night, I imagine! Around here they start chirping around 4 or 5 am I think...

  5. Favorite sound in summer is the AC kicking on. Just kidding. I am grateful for the cold air but I actually hate the sound of it. So loud!

And forgive me, but I had to laugh at the thought of an airplane on a lazy summer afternoon because my apartment in L.A. is on the flight path for Burbank airport and the planes are so loud and so close you literally cannot finish a sentence until it goes over and you have to use the closed captioning if you're watching TV. And they come every 5 minutes in the morning and evening.

But no. I totally get what you mean because here at my Mom's in the middle of the woods, an airplane going over is a rare and exciting thing. It sounds so far away and you look up and see it so teeny tiny or just the contrail coming out behind it, instead of looking into the passengers eyes and waving at them as they go by on final approach. LOL

Birds, yes! So many wonderful birds here in the woods. Most vocal and loudest seem to be the Cardinals and Blue Jays. I love them.

In L.A. we had the midnight mockingbird that Tammy speaks of above.

What other summer sounds...oh those awful Katydids!!! Huge green things like gigantic grasshoppers or crickets, but not. They should be starting up here soon. Ugh.

Boats on the water...yes. Love that.

    Summer thunderstorms. Love them.

    1. Haha right? That's a pretty good sound. Actually I like hearing the AC kick on at night sometimes... another one of those sounds. :)

Oh my that would not be good. Okay I understand your view on the airplanes! :) But right- I'm thinking more when it's an occasional drone way over head!

It's funny how I can like the sound of crickets or whatever but not a huge fan of the bugs myself. Just their sound I guess. And boats on water- one of my favorite sounds to relax. Something about it, and jet skis.

  6. The sounds of Summer in Las Vegas are birds chirping and singing early in the morning. And then starting in July it's monsoon thunderstorms where we get flash floods that come really fast and are usually over within an hour.

  8. I love sleeping with the windows open, gentle breeze, gentle rain. Very relaxing. The sounds of summer that I love - crickets for sure, birds, cicadas, the whir of a fan. We get the long horn sounds from freighters on the river, but no jet skis here. Trains though, lots of trains.

    And congrats on your win!

  9. I love being able to open the windows, but that was NOT really happening around here. We had flash flooding and the humidity was like 1000%. Ick. I am very jealous of you. Congratulations on winning the Bookish Games. Sounds like it was fun.

  10. Congrats on winning! In PR, it's so normal to always have windows open. And I mean, ALWAYS! When I moved to US, I missed the fresh air constantly. So I'm happy it's summer to finally have those windows open!

  11. Summer is LOUD where I am, lol! I live near a wooded area (there's a small reserve nearby) and at night it's crickets and frogs and cicadas and whatever else there there is in the trees and when I open the door to let the dogs out at night, I get hit with a buzzing and droning sound that's as loud and high pitched as a scream! It is nice in a way though, I do associate that sound with clear and breezy warm summer nights. Ahhhh :) Lovely art pieces this week too, more dinosaurs please!

  12. I'm listening to the ocean tonight an it's wonderful. Love how different seasons are marked by different sounds. Rain on a tin roof is nice, or the crackling fire is fall or winter for me.

You Owe Me a Murder looks interesting. I love the pic Beneath Lilies. :)

  13. Congratulations on the win!!

I agree, every season does have it's sound and location plays a big part in that. Your summer sounds much more relaxing and peaceful than mine. I live in a very urban area so mine is full of the sounds of people - our apartment pool is constantly full of happy kids and families so that's my main summer sound track. Not a bad sound, but your peaceful sounds would be wonderful.

    Have a great week!

  14. Congrats on the win! Back in the day, I used to love opening the windows to experiences the sounds and cool breezes. Now, I'm afraid of a mosquito breaking through any tiny hole in the window screen, so I keep those dang windows shut.(lol) Hugs...RO

  15. I love the sounds of summer. My husband hung two squirrel-proof birdfeeders (yeah right!) outside the window in front of his desk in the living room. He has a beautiful show of many different birds and their calls all day, but I can also see/hear them from my seat on the couch. Who knew the Cardinal birds had so many different calls?

  16. I love the sounds of the ocean, in summer and in all seasons. Crickets? Not so much. LOL.

The Favorite Daughter is on my list...and I can't wait for another episode of Big Little Lies.

    Enjoy your week.

  22. Congrats on winning the Bookish Games! I love summertime sounds too. Just little things like hearing the birds singing, crickets chirping, kids outside playing. Oh and the smells too since it seems like everyone in my neighborhood grills every weekend during the summer.

  23. Congratulations on winning the Bookish Games, Greg. And sounds of summer - I like the sound of distant lawn mowers along with the smell of fresh-crushed grass and the sound of an ice cream van tinkling out its song. Have a lovely week!

  24. Congrats on your bookish games win! That sounds like fun. I haven't read Nevernight yet since I have the book but the text is so small I have to hold the book away from my face and it hurts my eyes so I need to get the audio or the ebook but I am DYING to read it.
I love the sounds of the seasons, I think that is why I love the fall and winter so much. The sounds and smells are just so crisp and refreshing. I love it.

I hope you have an amazing week, Greg! Happy Reading! :)

  26. Congratulations for your team winning The Bookish Games!! And YAY to Baldur's Gate 3. I loved the two previous games so much. I wonder how the game play will be different. ;)

  27. Congrats on your win! Summer here means cicada’s, which are loud, kamikaze Christmas Beetles, and buzzing flies... none of which are soothing, but days at the beach which is only 15 minutes away, with the sound of gently lapping waves, are glorious.

    Have a great reading week

  28. Congrats on The Bookish Games win!!!! LEGENDS!!!! Also, ah, I love the sound of airplanes flying. It reminds me of summer. I feel like summer sounds like that and racecars. When I was little, there used to be a racetrack really close to my parent's place and I honestly always associate that sound with summer.

Oh gosh, that Game of Thrones concept art!!! I love it. Annndd, I am excited to hear your thoughts on You Owe Me a Murder.

  31. Sleeping with the window open and listening to the rain *sounds* lovely but living in a city with a high crime rate means I would never even consider leaving windows open at night. Big congrats on Bookish Games!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I've enjoyed this mild start to summer that allow me to leave the windows open and enjoy the night sounds to sleep along with, too. Rain at night is always a hit as is wind in the trees. Right now the young robins are particularly chirpy as they job shadow mom and pop around learning to do it all for themselves. We have a hummingbird who has us on his route early each evening and I love listening to the hum of his wings and seeing him dart in among the flowering plants. Saturday nights, we can hear the race cars down at the track and occasionally catch their after race fireworks in the distance. Summer fun!

That Mark Lawrence series is on the list, but I plan to hit his backlist first after just finishing Book of the Ancestor trio.

    Fun concept art!

    Have a great week, Greg!

  33. I'd love the lake sounds but I don't live anywhere near water... I don't think I've ever really considered the nighttime noises.

    Congrats on your team win!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Well there are sounds but I also love to see the fireflies at dusk. I love the smell of rain and right afterwards. I also love the feel of the warm air on a summer night, when it isn't too humid, just warm. Or even on a nice afternoon when it's sunny and you can feel a light breeze on your face / arms. '

Now winter you can hear ice cracking and wind blowing. You get a crisp crunch when you walk on the snow or a sloppy sound if it's a wet snow. You can sometimes hear tree branches cracking and falling when the ice / snow gets too heavy, or sometimes just the snow falls off in clumps.

    Have a wonderful week!

  36. Congrats on the win!

I do love the sound of summer rain, but I'd love it more if I didn't live in a swamp. Windows open in the summer does not work here at all!

Baldur's Gate is one of those games that I may eventually get around to playing, you know, one day. Lol.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  37. The windows open with the lake sounds and rain sounds like absolute heaven! Summer has fully hit here with crazy high humidity and super hot so window opening is a thing of the past. Yay for winning the Book Games! Have a great week!

  38. Baldur's Gate is a game that I always wanted to check out but never got around to- I love RPGs! I see that the original is available on Steam- yay! If I hadn't just dropped money on starting up playing The Sims again, I'd be downloading Baldur's Gate right now, lol.

  44. Congrats! I'll have to look into The Bookish Games for next time.
Ooh! You Owe Me a Murder sounds fun.
That pterodactyl concept art looks interesting. I'm curious if the artist has those two as companions/friends in a story.

  45. I love the sound of rain!! But to me the sounds of summer are the sound of a softball hitting a mitt just right (one of my favorite sounds ever) the sizzle of a BBQ, the crackle of a campfire, and the shouts of my brother and his friends as they play outside <3

    ReplyDelete
  46. Congrats on the reading games win. The sounds of summer - perfect. The sounds of winter are good too, like the crackling of the wood on the fire is what I am enjoying at present.

  48. Summer here is a silent time. It's just too hot during the day for anyone to do anything. My week in review

  49. Typical summer sounds to me are birdsong in the early morning (sometimes annoying if I stayed up late reading :) and crikets. For more than 20 years I've been going to the same place in Spain and there used to be a guy every morning selling food: "melones, cebollas,..." that is distinctly in my mind a summer sound as well.

Love the artwork you've chosen! Beneath Lilies is probably my favourite!

I hope to read my first Mark Lawrence book this summer! Very excited!

    Have a lovely week!

  50. I had to come back from Sunday because the song and the images weren't loading on my Kindle for some reason. I still can't see the song, but I love those dinosaurs! 😍

I hope you are having a great week. 🌞

  51. I'd never even thought about the sound of the seasons but they definitely have their own sounds. Like winter is always the sound of the central heating kicking in when your in bed. Spring is always a lot of rain. For me summer is probably the sound of birds when your window is open and insects (as well as the abject fear of buzzing in case it's a wasp).
