This week is Top Ten Platonic Relationships- defined as those relationships that are close but lack a romantic or sexual nature. I thought this was interesting because depending on how you define it, a platonic relationship could be one where there are feelings, on the part of one or both parties, but they just don't act on them? Since the topic seems pretty flexible I'm going to go with platonic relationships as well as some just awesome friendships.
Katniss and Finnick!
How about Levi and Reagan? I'm trying to remember- did they date before he met Cath? I think they did? But afterwards they were still good friends, I think- I'm gonna go there.
Sansa Stark and Myranda Royce.

I've heard people say Frodo and Sam may go past the line of just friendship, but I don't buy that. Yes Sam is extraordinarily devoted, and maybe the writing style contributes to it a little, but... no. It's just friendship AFAIK.
Frances and Aled do not fall in love!
Delilah and Gallagher are a pretty amazing friendship, especially how it develops.

I adore Frodo and Sam, and I never really bought the shipping of those two either. I mean his closeness to Frodo can only be expecting considering all the things they go through together in a world where they only know to trust themselves. It's one of my favorite friendships for sure.

DeleteGood friendships always make a story richer, and it's always nice when a character is surrounded by a supportive group of friends (or family). Apart from a novella, I don't think I've ever read a novel by Rainbow Rowell. She's definitely one of the more popular blogosphere authors though. :)

I agree- and I've only read the one book by Rainbow, which I liked, but for some reason I haven't read anything else of hers!

DeleteLevi and Reagan dated when Cath became her roommate... I'm glad they could stay friends but I thought it was a little weird romance wise in the book overall.

DeleteI haven't read The Lord of the Rings (yet!), however I have seen the films and based off of those - I adore Sam & Frodo's relationship and how it pans out.

DeleteI just loved everything about Levi, and he was able to maintain a friendship with Reagan, but I think it was overshadowed by the amazing friendship between Cath and Reagan. Loved them so much!

DeleteFinnick! He was my favorite! When he risked his life to carry Mags... and then what she did for him... my heart is still breaking. I also loved his friendship with Katniss, and I will never forgive the author for what she did to him!

I know! Finnick was the best- I loved too when they first teamed up in book two. I was like yesssss!
DeleteGreat list! I agree with you - they do love each other and they are devoted to each other, but not in a romantic way. The problem a lot of the time is that if anyone shows love for anyone else we immediately assume it's romantic which is a real shame when friendships can be just as, if not more, powerful.

DeleteFrodo and Sam are on my list too and I've never thought of them as anything except friends that love each other for friendship, loyalty and companionship. I agree on the Hunger Games too!

DeleteGreat list! Although I was a Peeta fan, I definitely felt Finnick and Katniss had a platonic relationship! I can't wait for Bellarke to happen! I mean, I still need to catch up on a couple of seasons but I have shipped them since the start of the show!

ReplyDeleteYeah, I think Sam and Frodo are truly just friends in the book, but it doesn't translate as well on film, plus into the 21st century. Love the Fangirl and Hunger Games picks as well.
ReplyDeleteI forgot about Fangirl. The relationships in that book are very realistic. I agree about The Hunger Games and George RR Martin’s books. Both of those series have great friendships.

I love that you started with Katniss and Finnick. They almost made my list as well. Their friendship was so lovely and it was very heart-wrenching in the end there. Which is The Hunger Games in a nutshell. Ooh, Fangirl is another good choice! Earlier I was like, I'm not seeing this book enough on this weeks topic and now suddenly I am getting to the people who are appreciating the books dynamics and it makes me happy. Love, love, love Radio Silence and George RR Martin's books always have such fascinating characters and relationships. Great picks!
ReplyDeleteYES I agree, this topic can get quite... complicated hahah. Like life, I suppose! But bite your tongue about Bellarke! You sound like Jason- "platonic soulmates" my ass! And in fairness, book Bellarke gets married, so. Katniss and Finnick are a great one- and is definitely friendship. As is Madistrand which I am obviously here for. And never get to see again. Couldn't they have given us one for the road? Or made Alicia his new drinking bud? Sad. I saw someone in the comments say Caryl- which, just like Bellarke, had better be endgame.

I've not read any of that yet, I refuse to expose myself to teasers or spoilers or any kind until we get news of a firm release date at the very least, lol!

I think that I have a lot of reading to do. I am actually really bad at remembering character names long term but I do think that I remember Finnick. Menagerie was a great book!
