Sunday Post #258

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

It's Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Book Date

How was everyone's week? Mine was nice and quiet. I've been binge watching Impulse on Youtube premium (yes I signed up for the free trial just to watch it- well that and Cobra Kai) and it's awesome! A very good show. Triggers for sexual assault, which I think it handles well, and oh it's about teleportation too. In other news, the Traverse Film Festival wrapped up last weekend, and there were lots of exciting things going on.

Okay. Last week I posted Some Thoughts on Book Blogging in anticipation of 5 years of blogging! And a fun Books I'll Probably Never Read tag. Also I reviewed Girls Night Out and Movies That Suck lived up to its name with Big Trouble in Little China. I mean, big time. This week will be The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. We're getting to the good stuff now, y'all. And I'll have the Bookshelf Book Tag on Monday (thanks to Ceri at Bookmarks & Postcards for that one)!!!

  3. I want to see Cobra Kai so bad. I have heard great things. I might have to look into a free trial too. The Spaceborn Few is due at my library on Aug. 30th and I am next in line. Hopefully, the person reads it fast and I get it before that.

    1. Oh my gosh Cobra Kai is hilarious- with the 80's music, and Johnny Lawrence kinda steals the show. :)

      Hope you get Spaceborn soon!

  5. I've been thinking about writing a short story involving teleportation. It's so interesting to think about how unimaginably different life would be if we could go anywhere easily!

And I love that marriage proposal!!

  6. Love your pics and links this week. Yay for true love and the proposal in public. I love that Cyber Punk Chick above, great detail. I read Girls Night Out recently but didn't really enjoy it. I'll have to skip back to where you talked about it and see how you felt. Enjoy the cooler temps this week!

    1. THanx! I liked Cyberpunk Chick too. Sorry you didn't enjoy Girls Night Out- I mostly liked it but I had some issues, mainly w/ the Ashley character.

      Have a super week!

  7. I love those dark forest type images! The cover for Onyx & Ivory is so pretty :)

  8. I've never read Death on the Nile, but on that first cover the guy looking in the window looks like a Scooby Doo villain lol

    1. I haven't either. And isn't that a goofy cover? I had to share both :)

  10. The Venetian Festival looks like fun. I've been binge watching Stargate SG-1. I know I watched it years ago but I don't remember it.

    1. It was fun. :) And I don't think I've ever seen Stargate SG-1? Although it sounds like something I'd like. I did like the movie.

  11. TV is just becoming so expensive. I have DirecTv and Netflix and HBOgo. I cancelled Hulu about a year ago, but kind of want it back to watch Castle Rock and The Handmaid's Tale. I feel like all of my money goes to entertainment (and I usually just look at my phone when the tv is on anyway). So no to YouTube Premium (but I'm glad you're enjoying the show!). Happy reading!

    1. It really is. And I can't keep track of everything anymore! So many shows, on so many platforms... I canceled Hulu too and then came back for the same reasons, I'll probably cancel again lol after I watch those!

  12. Aww what a lovely proposal! And what a great shot that is!! I'm glad you had a nice and quiet week! I hope you get another just like it! :)

  13. Impulse really was fabulous. Which... shocking, because YouTube? And I love that song too! VERY curious about Adrift, but you need to tell me about it first. I have Onyx & Ivory, I just haven't gotten around to it yet, sigh.

The Apocalypse picture looks like someone left McCreary in charge, sigh. I get a kick out of the Sega sign in the Cyberpunk one- you're right, the large version is great! Love the pictures of the film festival! The engagement one is adorable so I'm mildly stabby, but the second one is very impressive angle work. I googled The 7th Voyage of Sinbad and is there a remake? Because the 1958 one has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes so it might not actually suck? Unless you have watched it and it sucks, I will obviously take your word for it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Right? Who would have guessed? Amazingly good. Now instead of book hangovers we have show hangovers...

Adrift is alright, I'm a little bored but gonna stick around. Hoping it gets better?

Yeah the little details in that one got me! And no Sinbad is NOT a remake- I'm watching the '58 version, warts and all. Should be a tremendous experience!

  14. Wow, what a fantastic evening for a film festival. Look at that dramatic sky, perfect backdrop behind the big screen.

And that post-apocalyptic pic is insane! At first I didn't notice the scale, though it was a strip of rocky beach. Then I looked closer and saw the city blocks and was like, whoa crap!

  15. Big Trouble in Little China, though - gawd.

I've always wanted to go to some sort of film festival. But having one with a boat parade and fireworks? That looks so cool. What a perfect location.

The apocalypse wallpaper is really scary.

    1. Right. That movie... yikes. :)

Same here! I haven't been to the Traverse City festival yet, even though I vacation there a lot! Hoping next year to make it up there on the film festival dates. The boat parade was actually a different festival, but it was pretty awesome too! :)

  16. Looks like gorgeous weather for the festival. That cover of Onyx & Ivory is kind of creepy. The apocalypse pic is downright scary. Ack. Kurt Russell had some seriously cheesy roles over the years.

    1. Yes he did! I always liked him in Escape from New York, but THIS one... yeesh. And the festival really did have nice weather this year. I wish I could have made it up there to watch some films.

  19. Man, I do love those vintage pulpy covers on Golden Age crime fiction! I need to read more Agatha Christie -- I can't stand Poirot, but I've been told her books without a series detective are often actually better.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I do too. There are some seriously fun and wacky covers out there! And I have read very little Christie, although my foray into Poirot was similarly lackluster. I need to try something else...

  21. Need to sign up for a free trial of Youtube premium, I want to see Cobra Kai.
I have Onyx & Ivory, you need to tell me how it is when you are finished. I have wanted to read it but havent yet. You love to know your thoughts.

I actually love the sound of Rain and a Thunderstorm. I have a whole playlist of it for when I need to relax at night before bed. I also love listening to the ocean. I hate the beach but love the sound of the ocean. I know I am odd. :)

I hope you have a fantastic week, Greg! Happy Reading! :)

    1. Cobra Kai was the bomb. All that 80's music... and I was totally rooting for Johnny Lawrence!

Onyx and Ivory I haven't started yet, but I hope to soon? I'm kinda stuck on a book right now...

I do too! And no waves rolling in, surf, is one of my favorite things to listen to at night! And I love a good thunderstorm/ rain mix. This one appealed to me because it's stormy but also when on widescreen I love the image when the lights are all off!

  25. OK, I haven't heard of Impulse. Why do all of these services have to keep releasing good stuff worth watching? LOL.

    1. Dude, you need Impulse. The first two episodes are free, so you can see if it's your thing. The opening is amazing- you'll see what I mean. :) But yeah I was NOT keen on adding a new service, I only did it cause they have a month free trial, but then I watched Impulse and I was like- woah!

  28. We were up there during the film festival but didn't do anything with it! Lol. Next year maybe we will - our kids are just too little right now. (we were there with my brother and his family) I did keep my eyes peeled for Jane Fonda but I didn't see her. :(

The Venetian Festival looks amazing! We are going to Saugatuck in October, for a girls day out. I feel like the city might be buttoned up for fall!

I need to read that Rachel Vincent book! Have a great week. :)

    1. Ooh how fun! Yeah I imagine it was crazy.

The Venetian festival is fun, but it's SO busy I almost don't recommend it? I mean parking... but it's busy most weekends. October actually might be a great time to go, the crowds will be less and I'm sure most of the shops will still be open (hopefully)? I hope you have fun!

      Love your new blog!

  29. I thought about trying the free trial so I could watch Cobra Kai but never did though I did get to watch the first two episodes which seemed pretty decent.

Sorry I put you through such torture with that movie! :) I loved reading your thoughts it kind of makes me want to watch it again! It's so bad but I was a huge Kurt Russell fan back then so loved it...lol.

    Have a great week!
