This week is Top Ten That Feature Characters That Are X. So in other words kind of a freebie. I'm going with characters who have lost something- or have secrets- I guess this includes characters who are unreliable narrators. So here's my list.
This one is a woman who sees something she shouldn't after not taking her meds for a manic/ bipolar type of illness.
Memory loss. Everyone is telling her who she was, but who is she now?
Another memory loss tale, and one of the better twist endings I've read.
Narcissistic personality disorder plays a role here, and both the main characters- victim and forensic psychologist- are missing answers from previous events.
Lots of secrets.
MC wakes up in a ditch, has lost several years of memories, but can fight. Like really fight.
Facing fears, and secrets.
A town full of secrets and a murder.
How well do you really know someone?

DeleteOoh I love unreliable narrators. I haven't read any of these but a book I really enjoyed that would fit this category is Code Name Verity.

DeleteI've not read any of these but they all look and sound great. Awesome topic. Unreliable narrators usually scare me after they all seem to get compared to Gone Girl. Hope that comparison ends soon!

Lost Girls flies under the radar a lot, I think? Never saw many reviews for it, but I thought it was great. Radio Silence I recommend.

DeleteI hear good things about Jessi's book, but alas, have never read one of her books. 'History' also boasts a really interesting cover design too, which hopefully sets up a good story.

ReplyDeleteI like a good unreliable narrator too. I didn't use to, it was kinda weird not knowing if you could trust the MC, but I've grown to like 'em.

I've seen some mixed reviews for it. I liked it but when I read some of the negative reviews I totally saw their points, so yeah.

Oooh I love your take on this week's topic! Secrets are such great book fodder. I have enjoyed the two of these I have read (One of Us Is Lying and The Secret History of Us) and so I definitely need to make sure I read the others, too. I need more twisty/secretive books in my life!

That's a tough one, but I'll say- The Girls in the Garden really stuck with me afterwards.
DeleteThe Secret History of Us was a good YA, Emma in the Night is quite good as is Radio Silence- but if I had to pick one I'd go with Girls in the Garden.
This was an interesting theme! I've heard good things about Radio Silence and I think that I would love it if I read more books with unreliable narrators and that "WTF is going on" feeling. It's totally cool reading a book and not understanding a thing. It's the best type of feeling... hahaha no. I hate being confused. But it may be interesting.

I love that idea of WTF is going on- exactly! I didn't use to like unreliable narrators but now I think it adds something- since you have no idea what's happening sometimes! And Radio Silence is good!
DeleteI love characters with secrets! Not surprisingly I think almost all of these are on my TBR. I especially want to read the Lisa Jewell book - or really any book by Lisa Jewell at this point. No idea what's taken me so long. Great topic!

ReplyDeleteI don't always love characters that are keeping a secret - it stresses me out reading about them, lol. However, I do love amnesia an how that is used to explores identity and who a person really is! Fun choice for this topic!

ReplyDeleteI will admit, all of these books but One of Us Is Lying are new to me! Unreliable narrators are some of my favorites. Sadly, I don't enjoy reading thrillers, so I don't often find them in what I'm reading. Are any of these NOT thrillers?
ReplyDeleteLost Girls is a YA, as is The Secret History Of Us. Not thrillers but more just contemps, although Lost Girls has some fighting. Radio silence is a YA contemp too, and quite good.
