Sunday Post #214

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

The week started out HOT and then about midweek the temp plunged 20 degrees. Welcome to fall! The leaves are really starting to turn now and I'm loving the idea of cider and doughnuts (as in, I haven't had either of those yet), and bonfires, the smell of smoke in the air- the whole fall thing. Pumpkins are turning up and there's a tinge of melancholy in the air as we enter a new season. Or, you know, if you're in the southern hemisphere, just ignore all that. :)

I am looking forward to all the October activities in the blogosphere. I remember a few years ago there were a ton of readathons and other things- seems like those have lessened. Do you have a favorite October event? I am happy to report that Frightfall seems to still be around- and this year it's all month long. That's right, all of October. Details here. I think I may be jumping in.

I reviewed The Breakdown this past week (good stuff) and this week will be The Pack. I read The Shark Club (loved) and There's Someone Inside Your House. On the Run brought the current plot to a head this week, and the new installment will be up on Monday. We've been gate- hopping a bit and I think it's time to head home and see what's what.

The Breakdown

Song of the week

PULP COVER OF THE WEEK:

Murder on the Orient.Express by Agatha Christie - another classic mystery that will keep you guessing.

BOOKISH LINKS

Okay some of you know I LOVED the first Murderbot book by Martha Wells. I see now on GR that books two and three- BOTH coming next year- have covers.

Artificial Condition (The Murderbot Diaries, #2)Rogue Protocol (The Murderbot Diaries, #3)

Ruins 2

This one put me in mind of an ancient lost city somewhere in a steaming jungle. And it made a good writing prompt.

By day the hum of insects and the chattering of monkeys were ever- present, although if one were quiet she might hear the sound of dislodged pebbles, or see a shadow darting through the ruins, almost as if she were being followed. At night however the city truly came alive, with strange lights in the high towers, and the occasional sound of chanting punctuated by blood- curdling shrieks.

  1. It got cooler here too but is getting warmer again by the end of the week. I just want fall to stay around. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the Shark Club. Have a great week!

  2. It is freezing over here this week and by the end of the weekend we are to get the rain and wind from those hurricanes that hit the Caribbean and US recently. We won't get it that bad but I'm a bit nervous as I hate high winds.

  3. 20???? We're still hot - of course it's FL so it will be months before we even start moderately cooling down but it still seems early for 20 lol

I'm looking forward to the next Murderbot books.

Love those images you've shared - especially the last one. Great inspiration for my writing, lol ;) Thanks!

Glad you liked the images, I find there's nothing better as inpiration than a good SF/ fantasy image!

  7. The weather doesn't feel like autumn at all over here, I keep leaving my house with such a big coat and then have to carry it around all day as its super hot afterwards! I'm so excited about Riverdale returning, I'm going to have to stay away from social media, as Netflix UK will be showing it a day later! One thing I do love about the autumn is that so many of my shows return! I hope you have a great week Greg!

    1. That's another great thing about autumn. :) And I hate days like that ha ha when it starts out cool, then you have to lug a jacket around! I'm looking forward to Riverdale too, and the fact that it's only 2 weeks away kinda surprised me!

  8. The weather was the same here. The high was 50° today after 90° on Tuesday! It is strange, in spring 50° feels like shorts weather, but today I was freezing and wrapped up in a blanket all day. Ha ha.

Thanks for the Solace video. I am going to listen to the whole thing later. I love the last image of the city. I love big cities. That vintage Murder on the Orient Express cover is really nice!

And I promise to get caught up on all of the On the Run installments this weekend. I wanted to wait until I had a good block of time to sit down and and really enjoy them. :)

Have a wonderful week. Cider and donuts sound great!

    1. Ooh 50's- I LOVE those temps. And yes- I agree. After winter I'm like 50's, get the shorts out, but this time of year it's like get the jeans and sweaters out lol.

Glad you liked the video! I did too. There is so much good instrumental/ ambient type stuff out there. And I am a sucker for a cyberpunk/ neon drenched cityscape...

Thanks for reading the On the Runs, and sharing your thoughts. I love to see what people think, good or bad.

  9. I love october as well :D
Funny enough our August was so cold, we had weather that was like 40 and everything started turning. September got hot, like 90s.... We had 91 Degrees two days ago and it plunged down to 50 the next day, like gee thanks for the warning.
Now it's cold, I don't mind it. But I have a cold, so that sucks.
It's the time of year to pull out those thrillers, so that's exciting :D
Glad you liked The Break Down, I'll see if I can get it on the list

    1. October is the best month. :)

Our summer was pretty mild too, I think most of our 90's came in Sept! And I know right? Hate it when the temp drops THAT much.

      Hope you feel better!

  10. Last week when I commented on your Sunday Post I had been swimming because it was 90. Now I am toying with turning on the heat because it's 44. Madness, I say. I feel like if people stopped associating pumpkins with impending snow, I'd like them a lot more. Just saying. Also my favorite October event is obviously the one I created and am hosting. Also just saying ;)

Ohhh the On the Run crew is going HOME!? That is exciting because who even knows where home IS? (Well, I guess you do haha.) I am almost afraid to ask how There's Someone Inside Your House went because, well, I've not heard great things. So sad. I'm glad that The Shark Club was good though! Because yes, I did add it to my TBR based solely on the cover, so yay for it not being in vain.

Exciting about more Murderbot! I have the first one on my wishlist, because the price will be lowered. I know it will. Love the new covers! The mining colony picture is what the Gagarin flashbacks better look like. Because that is now canon in my head. Love the ruins picture, too! I can definitely see that as a writing prompt, who wouldn't want to write that world! I could live without the giant bird hahah. The cyber punk one, as usual, reminds me of the first timeline's 2077 haha. The girl on Planet X is just so... calm haha. I do adore her hair though!

    1. I remember that, and the idea of swimming made me a little jealous ha ha! It cooled off here too, so I get it. And I am looking forward to your posts and all the others, it should be a fabulous October.

On The Run is going home! Actually they won't arrive until the next one, Monday's post is wrapping up events where they are, but it's setting the stage for who knows what?? The Shark Club was great, it might not be for everyone but it's one of those books I LOVED. There's Someone is just okay so far.

I am so glad she's doing more Murderbot! The first one was a scream. And yes that is Gagarin! Must be. It just looks so, sci- techy? Is that even a word? Clearly no.

  11. I loved The Breakdown.

Your mention of cider and donuts made me hungry, all of a sudden.

I enjoy bobbing apples, which was something we used to do at Halloween parties, but it could be a fall thing, right?

Great images...and I especially like that Cyberpunk madness.

Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.

  14. Mmmm I like cider but have not had it for a long time. And the last bonfire I went to was... ummm... maybe like 2007??? Lol. When I was younger, every year my parents and I would go to Iowa for a month or two where my dad's side of the family lives, and there was always a bonfire right near one of my uncle's houses, and I loved going to that. I don't participate in blogger events really though, I'm an isolated blogger lol, so I don't have a fave one of those.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Oh! But I did run into a tree once at the bonfire. It was very small and branchy and so I didn't even see it as I was running toward the bonfire, it just blended with the flames in the distance lol.

      Delete
    2. Ran into a tree? Now that's a good story! I had a friend who ran his car into a tree at a bonfire once, but we won't go there... I love the smell of a bonfire though. Or burning leaves. And cider- sign me up!

Oh, and last week my son and I were in St. John's at Uncle John's Cider Mill - still far from you? We had the cider but I wasn't impressed with the donuts. I like when they put cinnamon on the donuts and ours were plain, maybe for the masses of the field trip? The corn maze was FUN, though :)

Are you going to publish ever? Just curious :)

  36. Same in my area. It started out in the 90s (!) early this week, but is back down to the high 60s now. I only made it about 70 pages into There's Someone this weekend, but I'm liking it ok. Curious to see where it goes...and hoping the action picks up soon. Happy reading!

  37. It cooled off here on Friday, into the 70s (and 60s today), but it is due to warm back up into the 80s by midweek. I'm looking forward to crisp fall days in the high 50s and 60s, and fall colors, but I doubt we'll have either for a few more weeks.

There are so many blog events and readathons in October! Last year I did the Blog Ahead Challenge and the Discovery of Witches Real Time Read-Along. This year, I think I'll skip the latter. I have a hard time dragging one book out over 5 or 6 weeks. But I am SO in need of the Blog Ahead Challenge!

  39. It was cool here today...but like you it was a significant drop from the 80's of all last week. I haven't enjoyed fall so far (I almost never do if I'm honest), my allergies have been destroying me. So I just sort of sit inside and light fall candles and pretend that this season isn't out to get me. XD As for reading challenges it does seem October is a pretty event heavy month! Dewey's 24 HR readathon is coming up, which I almost always participate in. I'll have to see if there are some shorter readathons going on. I don't do well with week/month long readathon because I just put it all off until one or two days anyway.

    2. We did get some 80's (and even 90's for a couple of days) so it still kinda feels like summer? Except at night. :) And Someone Inside Your House wasn't bad- it didn't blow me away, and it's a great October read since it's a bit creepy, but it's just kinda average.

And yes remember all those events? I remember the Something Wicked blog hop, and there were others- can't remember all the names, but it does seem like some have disappeared!

  53. You are brave to read scary books. I freaked out when my uncle showed us Cujo back in the day. I think I can't handle horror because I was in utero when they made my mum watch The Exorcist. We're a bit cooler here in the east bay, Y'Area but it still gets to mid-70's by early afternoon.

  54. I'm not sure I want to read There's Someone Inside Your House because I haven't heard the best of things about it. But I really loved Murder On The Orient Express and some other Agatha Christie books. That cover looks so outdated, but also super literal & accurate.
I don't know what Frightfall is... but thanks for including it because now I can check it out. I also want to watch Riverdale, but in my country Netflix doesn't have it. I have to wait longer than US. There's something about copyrights between countries, so normal cable doesn't yet either. It's so frustrating because some shows EVERYONE is talking about are not available to me.

DID YOU WRITE THAT ABOUT THE CITY IN THE JUNGLE??? OMG LOVED it! when are you going to write a book? I'd totally buy it! [and I never buy books!]

  58. It's suddenly gotten cold here and I love it but I'm also annoyed because I was unprepared and haven't gotten out my slightly cosier jumpers and coat. I am interested to see your thoughts on There's Someone Inside Your House because I have failed epically at reading any September ARCs and that was one of them. I've seen varying things on it.

  59. It is starting to feel a bit more like fall around here. It kind of just seemed to happen. I keep thinking that I should try to jump in on some of the bookish events. I hope you have fun with it!

  61. Wow. I love that Cyberpunk Madness art!! That's totally how I see the future. Lol. Very Blade Runner-esque. I went and picked up that first Murderbot book on your recommendation! Adding to my TBR right away.
