This week is a Father's Day Freebie. I decided to do what I did for Mother's Day and divide this up between good dads and bad dads. It was kinda fun to think of these. Let's see what we got...
Her dad was way cool and they had a great relationship.
Her dad is a Special Forces guy. He comes to help her at one point along with some buddies.
One of the dads in this one is mentally ill and the protagonist writes him.
Dad in this one is just getting to know Lina, who just found that ... he's her dad. As you can imagine this one's cute.
So I was running out of good dads... Ned Stark- a good guy. Not the canniest player of the game, but an honorable man and a good dad.
Gemma's dad is an ass from what we know.
This guy's drunk most of the time.
This dad's a doofus. A nineteen year old is coming on all strong to his sixteen year old and he goes with it? Dipshit.
For every good dad in this series there are like 1,078,000 bad ones. Exhibit A: Tywin Lannister.
Exhibit B: Balon Greyjoy.
Lost Girl and The Girls in the Garden sound really good... *bustles off to goodreads* A great list!

DeleteA Song of Ice and Fire definitely has plenty of choices for dads, both good (Ned) and bad (Tywin, Balon, Stannis...) I hope to read Love and Gelate and Girl Out of Water soon, glad to hear they have some good dads :)

DeleteTotally agree with your GoT choices. Tywin treats Tyrion like filth, Balon Greyjoy is a dreadful father...agree that Ned Stark did his best for all his children including Jon. I'd rate him as a good dad.

DeleteThe Dad in I Found You definitely sounds like a doofus. I don't see that playing very well in real life. Love your Game of Thrones mentions. I'm really surprised to see there is even one good dad in the series!

ReplyDeleteI saw another list like this and my most recent "good dad" read was the dad in Alex, Approximately by Jen Bennett. He was a single dad that gave his daughter the freedom to figure things out but came down on her when needed. A nice mix.

DeleteSo many dads in A Song of Ice and Fire! I definitely agree with your comment about Ned Stark. His interactions with Arya pleased me a lot, the moment when he gave Arya her sword warmed my heart!

DeleteGoT does feature the full gamut of different kinds of dads. Ned Stark was definitely in the minority in that series as a good, honorable dad. Still remember one of my favorite quotes from him from the first season of the show - "War was easier than daughters"...makes me wanna laugh and cry!

ReplyDeleteTotally agree with Love & Gelato dad and Replica dad. Talk about opposites haha. I am laughing at the dad in I Found You. He sounds REALLY dumb. I can imagine lots of terrible GoT dads- at least there was one decent guy, guess that's a win! Great list! I was going to do this but then all the dads seemed to blend together in my mind and I got bored and gave up.

ReplyDeleteBalon is THE WORST - perhaps even worse than Tywin. I like how you kind of had to caveat Ned with ...well I was running out of good dads so...lol! Ned is definitely head and shoulders above everybody else in the Westeros world!
ReplyDeleteSo glad to see Love & Gelato on this list! It's one I've fully intended to read ever since it releases (and I think this author has another book releasing next year, maybe?). Perhaps I'll make it a priority this summer - which would be a perfect season to read this one in.

*gasps* I've read SO MANY OF THESE POSTS, and I didn't even realize that nobody mentioned Ned Stark! He's SUCH a great dad, I can't believe people just forgot about him (... well... he did kinda die...) I'd add Davos to the list too, even though he's not really a dad. He kinda was a dad to Shireen though. I'll have to check out the rest of the books - this week's feature definitely left an ache in my chest for good dad figures. :)

ReplyDeleteI like the division of good dads and bad dads you did. XD Love & Gelato sounds really good; I love stories where kids and their dads finally meet/get to know each other. I'll have to add it to my TBR.
