Bookcover Spotlight #105

Hello, Sunshine

  1. Umm, sorry to say I don't like that at all. I never like it when designers put 'a novel' on the front because, well duh, we could have guessed that. And what's it about? Some incredibly happy person (who likes them??) who eats oranges?? I suppose the author also wrote Eight Hundred Grapes so maybe it's about someone with a fruit fetish. Either way, I wouldn't pick this up and would have stern words with my cover artist.

    1. You know, I kinda like this one, but I see your points too. It does not give any sense of what the book is about, I have to say. So in that sense... yeah. What I do like is the bright summery feel of it. And since the cover of Eight Hundred Grapes is done similarly, I imagine they're gonig for a similar look. I can see where it would definitely not be for everyone though!

  4. I like this cover but that's probably because I read a synopsis elsewhere and want to read it!

    1. Ha ha I do too kinda, it doesn't grab me like Eight Hundred grapes but I liked that enough that I can see trying this.

  5. On the one hand, I like the simplicity of it, but I agree with Suzanna - I think they put "a novel" on it because the cover is so minimalist that you have no idea what you are getting inside - a memoir? women's fiction about a woman who buys a citrus grove? coming of age?
    Great cover to discuss!

    1. Good point. And I do think the whole "a novel" thing is silly. It is definitely love it or hate it one!

  6. I've got mixed feelings on this one. On one hand I love how bright and simple it is but I'm not sure it screams "buy me". Though I think next to the Eight Hundred Grapes cover it'd look pretty great. I'm betting that was the thought. I need to read Eight Hundred Grapes and am looking forward to seeing what you think of this one!

    1. See i think it would really nice next to Eight Hundred, which I'm sure is what they are going for. In fact I wouldn't mind having them next to each other on my shelf! But I also understand that you have no idea what it's about from the cover!

You should read Eight Hundred Grapes, I loved it!

  7. This cover is rather interesting! It's not the most wowing cover ever but I don't dislike it. And it sounds like the premise is pretty good too! ;-)

    1. I think I might pick it up to read the blurb, since you can't tell what its about, but it is definitely summery!

  9. I do like the 'Summery vibe' the cover is giving us and I'm always a fan of bright colours, but I don't like how they've just stuck a novel on the cover. Thanks for sharing this cover with us though Greg!

  10. I love the way it seems to focus on a positive and upbeat vibe, but it leaves me wondering about what's actually inside. Happy Friday! Hugs...RO

    1. Same here! What's it about??? It does give off a happy vibe though, which makes up for it with me.

  11. As a designer, I like the bright colors but I think it has to many words on it and it's missing something. Like I visually need something else.

    1. Yeah it doesn't work for everybody. I kind of like it but I think it's the bright colors.

  12. I like it! I want to see it on a finished copy, because I have a feeling it looks much nicer in person, even- like I bet the colors pop really well on the white background while you're physically holding it. So summery and fun!

  13. Makes me want to drink a tall glass of ice cold lemonade. :)

  14. I do like the summery vibe... but it doesn't give me enough to want to pick it up. It feels like they're banking on fans knowing the Grapes novel and picking this up. Is it a niche sort of novel?

  15. It looks like something I would pass right by but I do get a definite summer vibe from it.
