This week is a Read In One Sitting Theme but the specifics are almost like a free one. So I'm going with books that are hard to stop once I start. These are all books that take over my life when I read them. :)
The combination of relatively short chapters and fantastic characters makes this an obvious choice.
My favorite SF book in a long time.
Compulsively readable.

The third book of A Song of Ice and Fire- and perhaps the best? So much happens here- not least the redemption arc of Jaime Lannister.
This one kept me reading.
I had to know what happened...

I kinda blew through this one.
I would be super impressed if you read those Martin books in one sitting since his books are usually over 1000 pages. I'm a slowwww reader, so it would take me forever to finish books like that.

Oh there's no way I could read those in one sitting. It's more that they take over my life when I read them. :) And the Blue was really good!

DeleteThose books that you just don't want to put down are the best! I'm currently reading one of those right now. You should feel honored that I took a break to comment on your post :-P It's even better when it's not even so much that you want to know what will happen with some specific mystery or something but that you just love the characters and world and story so much that you don't want to leave!

DeleteAh so many books still on my TBR so I'm glad to hear that they will be hard to put down once I start because those are the best :) Especially need to get to Long Way To A Small Angry Planet!

Big Little Lies was one I couldn't put down. I thought it was such a great book!

It took me a lot longer than a day to get through Big Little Lies, but I loved it. Girls in the Garden is still on my list.

I like your description of this list: "books that take over my life when I read them". My reading lately hasn't been with these kinds of books, instead they just seem to drag! I need to read Big Little Lies...

This is a great list, Greg. I love books that are hard to put down. I almost went in that direction, but changed my mind at the last minute. I hope to read The Girls in the Garden very soon.

ReplyDeleteI like your take on this! I don't do many one sitting reads anymore but there are so many books that I find myself sneaking off to read just a few more pages. I really want to read The Blue and The Girls in the Garden.
ReplyDeleteI remember when ADwD came out, it consumed my life for days too. So much that, after I finished the book, I had a book hangover than lasted for months and I didn't pick up another book in that time because I felt like nothing else could grip me the same way.

DeleteI felt the same about Big Little Lies and City of the Lost. Can you believe I've never read George R. Martin? I'm a little afraid to pick up his series because I hear he doesn't hold back killing off characters. I'm going to pick up a Lisa Jewell very soon, but not this title. Makes me excited to read her work. The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet looks interesting. I'll have to check that one out. Great post, Greg! :)
ReplyDeleteBig Little Lies was fabulous (I'm liking the show also) and ditto for City of the Lost. And don't feel bad, I think a lot of people haven't tackled George RR MArtin's books yet. He does seem to kill off characters a little too enthusiastically. :)

DeleteGoodness, I don't think I've read any of these. Those read in one sitting books are always fun. I think the last time I did that was with 'I Am Not a Serial Killer' by Dan Wells. That entire series actually. Eoin Colfer's 'Iron Man: The Gauntlet' was close, but I think my need for sleep made it two sittings, instead of one. XD

ReplyDeleteThey are super long, and no I didn't read them in one sitting (I think my brain would melt). :) But they do take over my life when I read them.
DeleteWhen I first scanned this post, I thought, "YOU READ A DANCE WITH DRAGONS IN ONE SITTING?!" And then of course I saw that you modified the theme a little bit. If you had read A Dance with Dragons in one sitting I would have been beyond impressed.

DeleteCity of the Lost took over my life when I read it too! I was actually on vacation in New Orleans, and I stayed up until like 5 AM (after partying...haha...sigh) to finish reading it. TOTALLY worth it, imo!
