This week was a tough topic because it's a freebie and I had no idea. I finally chose to go with SF locales that I enjoyed. I've kinda confined this to stuff I've read more or less in the last year. So here are my Top Ten favorite SF locales I've read about recently.
The Wayfarer- who wouldn't want to be a crew member on this ship? Just the meals alone- with that view!
Union Station- about the coolest space station I've read about. Run by a benevolent AI and full of creatures of all possibilities this is a fun series- and super cheap.
The planet Triton is a water planet and this was probably the best water planet story I've read. I thought I was there on a storm tossed world and the indigenous species and their way of communicating was ingenious.
Coruscant- the capital of the Republic and a city- planet.
Several worlds are explored in this one but a favorite of mine is Azeroth, the forest world with a vast grassland and a great worldgate.
Sissix's homeworld. Here's how it is described- Theth dominated the desert sky, hanging close enough for her to imagine that she could reach out and brush its rings with her fingertips. Without the haze of city lights, shimmering colors shone down unhindered- the glow of neighboring moons, the murky purple gauze of the galactic cloud, and all in between , nothing but stars, stars, stars. Hashkath is a moon but has moons of its own, and it orbits a ringed planet.
Jump station Heimdall.
The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet sounds so good, I hope to get to it soon. Same with Illuminae and Gemina. And the planet of Scarif in Rogue One was definitely an amazing SF locale!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see what you think of it!
DeleteThe girl on the Union Station 1 cover kind of looks like the girl from Rogue One!
ReplyDeleteshe does, now that I look at it!
DeleteCoruscant is an interesting location. Poor Scarif. There are a lot of interesting worlds in Star Wars. Especially the books.
ReplyDeleteI sadly did not finish Illuminae (because of the way it was written) but the story itself was fascinating. If it had been written as a straightforward novel I would have liked it so much more.
I agree, and I love Coruscant. Sorry to hear you didn't like Illuminae. I can understand, I liked it (but didn't love it) but the format is not for everyone. I think they may have overdid it.
DeleteI certainly need to get the illuminae read at some point this year...and catch up on the Star Wars films!
ReplyDeleteIlluminae is interesting- certainly hyped, and I liked it but didn't love it.
DeleteI haven't read any of these yet, but they all sound fantastic. I really want to read Illuminae soon. Great topic!
ReplyDeleteI hope you like Illuminae!!
DeleteI just bought Illuminae and Gemina - now to find time to read them. You know the Wayfarer books made my list, although for a different reason, this week too!
ReplyDeleteYes, and I hope you enjoy them!!!
DeleteI did a top ten on setting too! I like your list and would say that the water planet is cool but the ones from both of Becky Chambers books are awesome, literally.
ReplyDeleteThe Chambers books were so good. And the water planet was very cool.
DeleteI'm interested in Illuminae and Gemina as well, but don't know when I'll get to them. The Long Way to a Small Planet has a gorgeous cover and it sounds like a really cool story to boot. I'm going to add it to my TBR.
ReplyDeleteI hope you like Long Way, if you get a chance to read it.
DeleteSanctuary Bay, The long way to a angry planet sounds good. I still need to read Illuminae.
ReplyDeleteSanctuary Bay wasn't sci fi like some of these but it had that vibe. I liked it a lot!
DeleteI haven't read any of these, but Gemina has definitely been on my radar.
ReplyDeleteThose books are so popular- I haven't read Gemina but I still included it because I love space stations and I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it.
DeleteI absolutely loved reading ILLUMINAE back in 2015 and already have GEMINA on my TBR. I've heard mixed things about it though but I really hope it's as good as the first one and I'm planning on reading it soon! :)
ReplyDeleteI've heard mixed things, especially that it's very similar to Illuminae, as well, but hoping that it's good!
DeleteIlluminae has been on my TBR list. I think I need to pick up that audio book and listen to it in the car with my son. We are currently working through The Lunar Chronicles series right now, but when that is done! I like your take this week. Freebies are always hard to pick a topic - there are so many possibilities!
ReplyDeleteThey are hard- I went back and forth. I hope you like Illuminae, would be interesting as audio I'd suppose.
DeleteI want to read the Star Wars one... I have been on SUCH a Star Wars kick since the movies have been coming out! <3 - http://www.domesticgeekgirl.com
ReplyDeleteOh you might really like Lost Stars!
DeleteI love the sound of the setting of World of Water! Definitely want to read it for that alone.
ReplyDeleteI'm very much looking forward to jump station Heimdall in Gemina.
Also very excited for the SF locales in The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet.
Definitely give it a try if it interest you. I thought it was quite good!
DeleteGreat list!! I loved Sanctuary Bay. I need to read Gemina and The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet. :D
ReplyDeleteI do too, I kinda even want to re- read Sanctuary Bay. We read so many books it's easy to forget the great ones. :)
DeleteGreat list... Lol, at first when I saw 'SF', I'm thinking you meant books/novels set in San Francisco (I live near San Francisco), but quickly figured out that's not what you meant.
ReplyDeleteHere's a link to my TTT post for this week: http://captivatedreader.blogspot.com/2017/01/top-ten-tuesday-freebie-top-ten.html
Ah I can see that. Thanks for stopping!
DeleteSF really gives you a vast array of settings. Illuminae has been on my TBR for so long, I really need to decide whether to read it or not. Great list!
ReplyDeleteI hope you like it if you try. It's certainly interesting and while I didn't love it as much as some did, it is nice to have read it.
DeleteThese look so interesting. I do enjoy Sci-fi so these really speak to me. SO need to get Gemina. Loved the first one. Great list!
ReplyDeleteThanks, and enjoy Gemina! :)
DeleteYess, Jump Station Heimdall was everything in Gemina - I have to admit, I'm not the biggest fan of SF novels, but I'm so intrigued by people who basically live in space. I WANT THAT, TOO.
ReplyDeleteWonderful list! :)
I tend to like space stations and don't read many, so I'm intrigued. I haven't read gemina yet but I included it anyway, I'm sure i'll like it. :)
DeleteI loved the Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. I've not read anything else from that list, but many look interesting!
ReplyDeleteThanks Olivia, and I liked Long Way. So good!
DeleteYes to those Star Wars locations! Plus, Jump Station Heimdall. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog earlier, Greg!
Ha ha I know right?
DeleteI haven't read any of those, but I am intrigued by the water planet! Illuminae is on my Wishlist. I love the cover for Sanctuary Bay!
ReplyDeleteThe water planet was so cool... it was done so well. Sanctuary Bay was fun too.
DeleteI have always been curious about Illuminae and Gemina. I really really need to start reading more Fantasy!!!!
ReplyDeleteThere's a lot of good fantasy out there. Are you going to tackle Illuminae do you think?
DeleteMy inner Star Wars junkie is screaming YES to both Coruscant and Scarif! Great topic this week!
ReplyDeleteYes- same! I liked Scarif, and Coruscant is a no- brainer!
DeleteIlluminae and Gemina I really want to read those but I want the books not an ebook format! I love this topic and the covers are always amazing.
ReplyDeleteI hope you like it. I did the ebook of illuminae and was fine, but others say the physical copy adds to the experience.
DeleteI'm really hoping to read more science fiction this year. I always love the art and covers you post and all of these sound really interesting though the only ones I'm familiar with other than anything Star Wars related are Illuminae and Sanctuary Bay. Great topic!
ReplyDeleteI hope you get to! And thank you! I'd be curious what you think of Illuminae.
DeleteLove this list! Most discussions about SFF locales are usually about planets, so thanks for not forgetting the space stations and individual starships :)
ReplyDelete~Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum
Oh Union station was fun, and I included gemina too because space station- even though I haven't read yet. I'm sure i;'ll like it.
DeleteThis is such a fun take on today's freebie! I really enjoyed Lost Stars and loved the planets we got to visit! Great list :D
ReplyDeleteHere are my Top Ten!
Lost Stars was fun! And thanks. :)
DeleteThe Chat Room from Alex+Ada was definitely a fun and unique invention! I need to get back to that series. And wile I haven't read "The Long Way..." I have a feeling I would love that spaceship!
ReplyDeleteI didn't think anyone would know that one, and I needed a tenth. lol but it was kinda cool. :)
DeleteLots of space and planet stuff on your list! I'd honestly just be terrified to really go into space lol, but, hypothetically speaking, it would probably be amazing to look out the window and just see stars and galaxies and whatnot. And some of that stations and planets on your list sound amazing and interesting. I still want to read that Union Station one! One of those books I haven't gotten around to lol.
ReplyDeleteI know, I tend to gravitate more towards the stuff where all the tech is assumed and in the background- the lived in feel and as a backdrop to stories. I don't actually want to go into space lol or deal with all the sciencey stuff. That's why Long Way was so fun. :)
DeleteI liked Union Station and want to read more, but I've probably forgotten a lot since it's been almost a year since I read it! They're cheap so I'll probably get more at some point.
I don't read a great deal of this genre, but have enjoyed what I have read in the past. I've heard really good things about the Illuminate books, but feel like the style wouldn't suit me. Still... I might have to take another look at it.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland, Greg. :)
Illuminae was hit or miss- a lot of people liked the chat log/ security footage type storytelling and I did too, although whether they can pull that off across three books will be fun to see. Apparently people are liking the 2nd one
DeleteAwesome list! I would love to visit those places!
ReplyDeleteHere’s my TTT!

I am intrigued by Gemina after recently finishing Illuminae!
ReplyDeleteI NEED the Long Way to a Small and Angry Planet. Also I did not know Claudia Gray had written a Star Wars novel. Interesting.
ReplyDeleteI think I need to stop procrastinating with Illuminae and start that series soon! the Long Way to a Small and Angry Planet sound so good! Sissix's homeworld is like a scifi dream! moons with moons on ringed planet ahhhhhh
ReplyDeleteI seriously MUST get to GEMINA because I loved Illuminae and I honestly NEED to know what happens next! I had bad luck with my first Star Wars Expanded Universe book and now I'm scared to try more but at the same time, I really want to try more because I know that there are some great ones out there and I'm missing out! Oh and The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet is a must read for me and asap at that LOL!
ReplyDeleteI am really stoked to get to The Long Way! World Of Water_sounds and looks fascinating.:)
