Rivendell is a place of great peace in Middle earth. Known as Imladris to the elves it is a refuge, a haven, from the storms of Middle Earth. The half-elf Elrond with his ring Vilya maintains a place of peace in the foothills of the Misty Mountains. It is here that Bilbo Baggins stops on his way east with Thorin's band, and later Frodo also comes here after a near fatal encounter with Ringwraiths. Interestingly, it is also where Aragorn was raised- the future king of the Reunited Kingdom.
'a perfect house, whether you like food or sleep, or story- telling or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all.'
Rivendell is a place where one can relax and heal, sing with the elves or share stories with them by firelight. Imagine stargazing in the valley of Rivendell! Such a repository of lore and history- the libraries that must be there, the wealth of knowledge. And time seems to pass differently there.

The Hall of Fire is a special place within Rivendell. Tolkien describes it:
'Here you will hear many songs and tales- if you can keep awake. But except on high days it usually stands empty and quiet, and people come here who wish for peace, and thought. There is always a fire here, all the year round, but there is little other light.'

"In all the days of the Third Age, after the fall of Gil- galad, Master Elrond abode in Imladris, and he gathered there many elves, and other folk of wisdom and power from among all the kindreds of Middle-earth, and he preserved through many lives of Men the memory of all that had been fair; and the house of Elrond was a refuge for the weary and the oppressed, and a treasury of good council and wise lore."
This is the place I have always dreamed of living as it has great beauty and total peace. I wonder if Amazon deliver there...if so it would be perfect! Beautiful artwork.
ReplyDeleteIf Amazon delivers there, I'm going!!
DeleteI love these illustrations!
ReplyDeleteI do too!
DeleteRivendell would be a wondrous place to behold wouldn't it?! Just the fact that Aragorn grew up there and both Bilbo and Frodo made stops there along their journeys makes it a must-see. I love Elrond too so I'd love to see his domain, you know? I still prefer Lothlorien for aesthetic reasons (and Galadriel ♥) but this is a dreamy location to be sure :D
ReplyDeleteI'd love to go there. Between that and the Shire... but yes Lothlorien would be awesome too.
DeleteSounds like a wonderful place. Love those pictures! I've never read the books, but I watched the movies and I must say I can imagine Bilbo walking around a place like Rivendell!
ReplyDeleteI can too! Or even better me walking around there lol. :)
DeleteIf you find a secret passage there, let me know, will ya? I think I could do with a dose of that place right now. :)
ReplyDeleteRight? I would love to go!
DeleteGreat post! I've always loved reading about Rivendell and seeing it when I watched the movies.
ReplyDeleteSame here. :)
DeleteOne of my favorite LOTR locations! :)
ReplyDeleteRivendell is far and away my favourite Hobbit/LOTR location. When I win lotto, it's my dream to open a genre bookstore and call it The Last Bookstore - partly as a nod to The Last Homely House in The Hobbit. :)
ReplyDeleteI will never not be interested in seeing artwork of Rivendell! I love how the movie depicted Rivendell, but the variations in artwork are always so amazing to see. Would that it could be a real place! I love the Lord of the Rings. <3
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Greg! Have a wonderful week. =)
Alyssa @ The Eater of Books!
You're just making me want to immerse myself in Lord of the Rings and I don't have time for that! Rivendell was always the most magical of places when I was younger I read The Hobbit so often and I was like Bilbo, fascinated by eh elves. I love the pictures you've chosen, they are perfect.
ReplyDeleteThat bottom pic was the cover of my ever copy of LOTR, it was so well read I had to get another copy, anyway Rivendell is such a magical place, a sanctuary and also the name of an old folks home just down the road from me!!
ReplyDeleteEven though most people like Hobbiton, I like Rivendell more than any other place in Middle Earth. Even in the movies, it is so beautiful. These pictures you posted are so amazing!
ReplyDeleteYEEES! Thanks for sharing all the pretty pictures!
ReplyDeleteI went to New Zealand a few years ago, and I totally get why they chose there to film the movies. It's freak'n gorgeous and really like real like Rivendall, haha. Great post, Greg!
If I could vacation in Middle Earth, Rivendell is where I'd want to go. Such a beautiful and relaxing and safe place to be. I want to stay there for the next four years :)
ReplyDeleteIf I lived in Middle Earth though I think I'd want to live in the Shire. For once in my life I'd get to be a tall person (but I also like small town/rural life so Hobbiton and the Shire would suit me better than Rivendell) :)
Very nice post. I love the pictures.
I love these posts! The descriptive excerpts and the illustrations are stellar. I am so happy that I am rereading The Hobbit this year. Who knows, maybe I'll end up reading all of them again. :)
