Here it is! The Top Ten of 2016- woo hoo! I was going to do a post on my favorite reads of the year, so when I saw this was Top Ten topic that worked out. This is going to be my 10 favorites of the year- not necessarily the 10 "best" by any category other than did I love it. So without further ado... here are my 10 favorite reads of the year.

DeleteGreat list - lots of new to me / unread by me titles here, but I did read The Girls in the Garden and enjoyed (although not a favourite). Lisa Jewell's writing was new to me, and I'd be keen to read more works by her.

DeleteThe only one of these that I read was Long Way to a Small Angry Planet. It was one of my top reads too.

DeleteGreat list! Hope to read Girls in the Garden next year. I'm also glad to see Clouds in My Coffee there. Just started Mulhern's Send in the Clowns last night - so good to get another dose of Ellison and friends!

DeleteI really need to make time for City of the Lost. I love Armstrong and have no doubt I will enjoy this one as well. I really liked The Invisible Library but I've heard some people thought the second book went downhill so now I'm afraid - haha. What a wonderful list and I am going to have to locate Girls in the Garden from the library.
ReplyDeleteThat was the first novel by her that I read and it won't be my last. I hope you like it. And The Girls in the Garden too. As for The Invisible Library #2 I liked the first one but I haven't been DYING to get the next one, you know- so I'm sorta waiting.

DeleteSanctuary Bay was so good!!! Great list. I still want to read The Invisible Library and that Kelley Armstrong one.
ReplyDeleteSanctuary Bay ruled! I totally agree- in fact of all the ones I've read that's one of the few I'm actually thinking of re- reading. I liked the boarding school aspect and the creepiness of the SF parts late in the book. :)
DeleteJulie Mulhern is always fantastic! I really want to read The Invisible Library and pretty much anything by Kelley Armstrong. I've heard she's amazing. Girls in the Garden looks really good too. Plus Jewell is an author I keep meaning to read. Great list!
ReplyDeleteI think you would like City of the Lost. More of a thriller than paranormal- in fact there are no real PN elements. I liked the girls in the Garden- thought provoking.
DeleteI haven't read any of these! I don't often read Sci-Fi but this year, I really read very few of them. Maybe I need to change that.

DeleteGreat to see The Immortals on your list! I'm pretty sure that will end up on my Top 10 list as well. And I'd like to check out The Invisible Library and Angry Planet at some point, so seeing those here makes those choices all the more encouraging. Hope you had a Merry Christmas, btw!
ReplyDeleteAS I reflected on it over the year it really did stick in my mind as one of my favorites. Such a unique concept. And the sequel is close so I'm looking forward! I highly recommend Angry Planet!

DeleteWhat a variety of genres and interesting looking books. If only there was time. I think I made note of the Jewell book and Love & Gelato before when I have visited, but when books go on the "I loved these in 2016", then it gives more incentive to read them.

DeleteI am especially dying to read the Becky Chambers book - It sounds so up my alley, I'm not sure why I haven't read it yet, especially since book two is out or is coming out soon! I've also seen The Immortals mentioned a couple times as a best of... I remember when it came out it looked great but then I didn't hear a lot about it then so am excited to see it getting mentioned more than once on these end of the year lists. Looks like a great year of reading even though I've read none of them!!
ReplyDeleteOh you should read it- definitely. A Long WAy might be my favorite book of the year- it's that good. And you know I almost saw NO reviews of The Immortals, but I really liked it. I hope you give it a shot!

DeleteI have Sanctuary Bay! I remember getting a copy from the pub, early in 2016. I haven't read it though (it was sent unsolicited). o_o It's encouraging that it's on your top ten though! Wonderful list, Greg. =)

I liked Sanctuary Bay a LOT, and am a little bummed there's no sequel (as far as I know- they left the door open but last I checked there were no plans). So it's a standalone which is kinda nice- and it combines boarding school with scifi so if you like those things, WIN!! :)
DeleteIt's actually awesome seeing a nice mix of genres in your list, and so cool that you got to discover new great reads in sci-fi! I enjoyed Chambers' book a lot.

DeleteI love that you read across so many genres! I love the cover of the Morgaine book - such a classic depiction of her but white. Isn't she usually all black? And man, do I want to read The Invisible Library series. I wish I had time for that series. BTW, have you read Kevin Hearne yet? I think you might like his stuff, if you don't mind humor in your mythology. Great list!!! My TBR is hating me these days...
ReplyDeleteI read a lot more widely now since I've been blogging- I used to be all fantasy all the time! Morgaine you might be right- they call the White Queen sometimes that could be her complexion and hair! It's been a while. I've only read one Kevin Hearne book but it was a Star Wars book- I haven't read his UF but I do like humor in my fantasy so I should give him a try. :)

DeleteThree cheers for City of the Lost! That's one of my favourite reads of the year, too. I haven't read any of the others, but I've been dying to get to The Invisible Library since I first heard about it. And Night School looks really intriguing, too! I have a weakness for boarding school books.

I missed out on writing a post this week but when I get around to it The Invisible Library will probably make my list as well. I am eagerly anticipating book three next month. I also enjoyed Love & Gelato and have The Girls in the Garden on my TBR pile.
ReplyDeleteReally? Love & Gelato is on your top ten? It must be better than I think. I'll have to keep it in mind this year. Sanctuary Bay and Need both look very interesting. I'm drawn by the covers especially since they look dark.
