Cover Characteristics is a meme by Sugar and Snark- every week a characteristic is selected and we post 5 books with that week's theme.
This week's pick- Book Covers of the Year
The rogue topics continue as Cover Characteristics is officially on hiatus. This week is a special Book Covers of the Year edition. These are the covers that were my favorites, for whatever reason- I like covers that are mysterious, or have good art, that jump off the shelf or give a taste of what the book is like- and for me these are the covers in 2016 that met that standard.
One of my favorites of the year, with Central Park and the constellation- not to mention the beam of light shining down- I think it gives a mysterious tone.
Not an amazing cover necessarily, but I like it- she looks very menacing and between her expression and the sort of dot matrix look to the font, it gives off a certain tone.
One of my favorite reads this year- I love the vegetation and the sense that this may be an idyllic setting with secrets to be revealed?
Another favorite cover, I love the sense of high seas and danger, along with the rain slicked window.
I'll be honest I kinda wanted to read this one after just seeing the cover! While the book was a tad disappointing I love the mysterious nature of it- the hand trailing in the water, the bridge in the background and the colors of a twilight sky?
I had mixed feelings on this book but it does have a nice twist, and I LOVE the cover.
My favorite SF read of the year- tons of diversity, big ideas, and fun.
You're right, you did choose a lot of mysterious covers! I love the Small Angry Planet covers, but it bothers me that they changed the way the author's name is displayed. Individually though, they're good lol. And The Girl from the Sea is a great one. And I agree that Need is not necessarily the most amazing but it does have a menacing vibe and that makes it good.
ReplyDeleteGreat choices!
I like those covers too. You know I never noticed that- I think I like the first too! And The Girl From The Sea is one of my favorites, I like the mysteriousness of it. I'm always drawn to covers like that.
DeleteWow I love these covers. Especially The Girl From The Sea; I'm a sucker for underwater scenes, especially when the character's floating dramatically. Lol ;)
ReplyDeleteGreat picks!
I love that cover! It's like you look at it and it's not really obvious what it's about, but it looks mysterious! :)
DeleteI like The Immortals cover...in fact I like the covers for the series and I do plan at some point to look at this series. When time allows!
ReplyDeleteI love that one too- I'll admit that's probably what drew me to that story!
DeleteThe Incident on the Bridge is definitely my favorite from these. Love the feeling I get from it. Lovely choices!!
ReplyDeleteI've always liked that cover. The bridge in the background with the lights...
DeleteAll of these covers are fabulous, but I think Girls in the Garden is my favorite....so eye catching!
ReplyDeleteI like that one too- one of my favorites of the year!
DeleteThe cover for The Incident on the Bridge looks intriguing! Too bad the book was a bit of a let-down for you. I also like the cover for The Woman in Cabin 10.
ReplyDeleteI like that cover a lot. I'll admit it's a big part of the reason I got the book... :)
DeleteOf all of these I like the one for The Immortals and The Incident on the Bridge.
ReplyDeleteI'm fond of both of those- and The Immortals especially as soon as I saw it I wanted to read it. :)
DeleteI love a mysterious cover! Those are always the ones that draw me in and make me want to read them. The Girls in the Garden and The Woman in Cabin 10 are definitely on my TBR!
ReplyDeleteI do too. I hope you like both of those- I thought both were quite good!
DeleteInteresting choices! You might be interested in a blog series of mine called "Cover Love". In particular, this post: https://fictionophile.wordpress.com/2016/11/19/cover-love-part-13-seeing-double-or-even-triple/
ReplyDeleteThank you. I do indeed love cover posts so I'll definitely come by and check that out.
Deleteoh wow you changed your background! [I had to take an involuntary break from blogging so I had not visit you in a while] LOVE the wood background!
ReplyDeleteBesides Kristen's this is my favorite blog as far as cover goes. You two always post the best cover characteristics. "The Immortals" and the "Woman in Cabin 10" are my favorite on your list. Now I'm curious about that book "The Girls in the Garden" :)
I did- thanks for coming back. Glad to have you back! And appreciate the thought- we're sort of keeping this meme alive maybe lol while it's on hiatus. Hopefully it comes back! All three of those you mention are nice- and they're good books too!
DeleteI love all the covers you've picked as your favourites of the year - I definitely get a mysterious vibe from many of them. The Girls in the Garden is a particular favourite of mine from the year.
ReplyDeleteThank you- and I agree I like the mysterious vibe. The Girls was a favorite of mine as well.
DeleteAll these covers are great, especially the ones from Becky Chambers' books. I also loved the cover of "Fantastic beasts and where to find them" a lot.
ReplyDeleteThe Chambers covers are nice. And I agree- i liked that one too!
DeleteThis would be a really hard one to do! Not sure which of my books I read this year that I would pick.
ReplyDeleteThese are great! I loooove The Immortals. I mean, I haven't read it but I need to, and mostly for the cover. Also love The Incident on the Bridge, The Girl From the Sea, and the Becky Chambers ones.
ReplyDeleteThese are all great covers, well designed and well balanced. The Girl From the Sea is the most striking, I think, but the two Becky Chambers books have the most beautiful covers.
ReplyDeleteHappy holidays and happy reading!
It really is amazing how a cover can completely change the vibe. I just went to look up the Becky Chambers books on Goodreads and saw another cover and wow! lol
ReplyDeleteYou seemed to like a lot of water/starry sky type of covers. I like them too though. The Woman in Cabin 10 has a good cover; simple, but interesting!
ReplyDelete-Lauren
So many pretty covers! I love the City of the Lost cover. It's just such a simple design that works. It's definitely a favourite of mine from the Kelley Armstrong covers. And I loved The Woman in Cabin 10 cover too. I hadn't seen the cover for The Incident On The Bridge, though. Very mysterious and cool. I do think my favourite covers on here are the Becky Chambers ones, though. I do love a good starry cover, I'm simple like that.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of The Woman in Cabin 10 cover is that it's actually textured. :)
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, these are great covers. But I loved reading your explanation as to why you liked them. Creating a book cover is true art, it's the wrapping that titillates the reader as to what it contains inside.
ReplyDeleteI love the covers to the Chamber's books, and I agree the mood to The Immortals cover is fantastic.:)
ReplyDeleteThese covers definitely have an air of mystery to them! I love the long way cover and the incident on the bridge as well. Great feature Greg!
