This week's pick- Prehistoric Settings
The rogue topics continue as Cover Characteristics is officially on hiatus. This week- with SciFi Month here I decided it was time to delve into the worlds of yore, the mists of prehistory- I've always loved the lost world trope, the idea that somewhere there is a place where ancient monsters still roam. What better time to take a look at covers that deal with those very things? So here is my look at prehistoric settings.
Frank Frazetta doing what he does best- painting a semi- nude person locked in battle with the forces of nature. His art always had a certain vibrancy.
Frazetta - I like this one. Little touches, like how her hair sticks to the spear.
This one is distinctive although it doesn't relate entirely to the book- there's no manta ray for example shooting a beam of energy??? at the sub.
This is actually the DVD cover I think rather than the book cover, but I like it.
I'm not really a prehistoric fan but I love the cover of The Sky People. The T-Rex fighting the sub is pretty good too even if it's not so related to the book!
ReplyDeleteI don't read many (or any) prehistoric books but I am loving that Clan of the Cave Bear cover - even if it is for the movie - which I have seen.
ReplyDeleteI've always loved Frazetta's work, especially the covers he'd done for the pulpy SFF from back in the day. While it's not really sci-fi or prehistoric, I also really like the covers for Victor Milan's Dinosaur Lords series, just more proof that dinosaurs are cool no matter what or when :D

Ok well the Clan of the Cave Bear is my favorite because black, white, and red lol. But I also like the art on the Sky People cover. And the first wooly mammoth one is cool too. But yikes, the man being carried away by a pterodactyl?! That sucks for him but is also a cool cover lol.
ReplyDeleteAnd hahaha I love that there's a manta ray shooting a beam of energy on the cover even though it's not in the book. Too funny.
I love wooly mammoths and mastodons! Have you read and of the Clan Of the Cave Bear series? I read the first two and loved them, but the third one disappointed me because it just seemed repetitive. I love the classic ERB covers. :)
