Sunday Post #161

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

Another hot week, sunny and warm- it's supposed to cool off this weekend. Summer is hanging on but autumn is almost here.  Actually Thursday was the first day  of fall. Man that was a quick summer. In other news I got sick this week. Stuff's going around and I caught it somewhere. But other than that it was a good week. I read some stuff and returned to Netflix (my preciousss) so all is good.

Heather at Random Redheaded Ramblings was talking Omnia and her, La La in the Library and I are doing a triple review of it in October. So that should be fun. Omnia was super cheap on Amazon last I checked.

I read Nerve this week and will be reviewing it on Thursday. I also posted my thoughts on The Girl From The Sea here

The Girl from the SeaNerve

This is very well done and worth a look. It's about three stormtroopers right before they go into battle- no explosions, just three guys talking about why they're doing it. Check it out- what do you think?

And I'm listening to

PULP COVER OF THE WEEK:

NEW ARRIVAL/ UPCOMING REVIEWS:

Replica (Replica, #1)Dead Girls Society

BOOKISH LINKS

The difference between elves and fairies explained.

These two songs go together very well and play back to back on a compilation I have.  It's good mood music for reading, especially dark fantasy.

  1. I'm sorry you've caught a bug, Greg! I hope you'll be back in top shape in no time.
Fall is arriving here, too, we feel it mostly with the cooler nights which makes it so much better to get a good night's sleep!
Replica is a book I'm oh so very curious about, I can't wait to read your thoughts on that.
Have a wonderful weekend and happy reading.

    1. I'm pretty excited about Replica. I read the first three chapters and I was hooked, so it should be good. And thanks! I feel better now, after a rough couple days. :)

  2. It is finally starting to cool down a bit here. Hope you feel better!! Can't wait to see what you think of Replica. I have that to get to soon. Have a great week!

    1. Glad you're cooling down. I'm liking it although I suspect the temp change contributed to me getting sick. Still... nice to have fall.

  3. Bummer you caught a bug - wouldn't be surprised if it's from the way the weather keeps bouncing around. Hope you're feeling 100% soon.

I had no idea Nerve was a book - I almost went to the theater to see it last night too! Glad we didn't, because I want to read it first... Assuming you're review is positive. If not, maybe I will skip the read.

    Have a great week :)

    1. I totally think it's the weather. When the temps change I sometimes get sick, although it's been a while since I have. And Nerve- I didn't realize it was a book either right away. I wanted to see the movie but don't know if I'll make it.

  4. Sorry you were feeling under the weather. My son woke up with a cough that sounded like a barking seal. He gets it every year at this time. I hope you are feeling better.

The weather this weekend was AMAZING! Tomorrow is going to cool down a lot and I plan to make some chili to honor the chill.

I might be reading replica next month. Just can't figure out which way to read it.

Have a great week, Greg! Hope you are feeling better!

    1. Yeah if I get sick it's usually in the spring or fall when the weather changes. Enjoy the chili! Sounds yummy. And Replica should be good- I think I'm going to read both at the same time, and alternate chapters. She said it works well that way, although you can read it any way and enjoy it I guess...

  5. Am intrigued by Dead Girls Society. It looks good (and I realise how macabre that sounds!!!)

It's already getting quite warm here in Australia - high 20C during the day... I'm hoping my new house retains a cool breeze through it as it doesn't have airconditioning.

  7. Our triple threat review. Heh heh. Thanks for sharing the U2. I loved them until Joshua Tree came out and then they became a little too polished for my liking. It is always wonderful to hear earlier stuff. Thanks, as always, for the art. I am looking forward to your Dead Girls Society review. Have a stellar week wnd that includes being 100% well! :)

    1. Thanks! I feel a lot better- I was sick as a dog yesterday, felt terrible. Today much better. Can't wait for our triple review- should be fun! And U2- I honestly only like their old stuff- this song and Sunday Bloody Sunday/ New Years Day stuff. Everything after that I hated.

  8. It's been really warm where I am. I don't know where fall is. Actually, I do know. It's in the mountains. LOL! We went on a drive yesterday up to look at all the trees. One of my favorite things to do in the fall.

  9. I hope you are feeling better, Greg. I was sick a couple weeks ago and it was no fun. Hopefully your weather will cool down soon. We've had great weather as of late, but are expecting it to heat up again. It's supposed to be 101 on Monday. Jakku the First Wave was well done, I agree. Thank you for sharing.

I hope you have a great week, Greg!

Glad you liked the video. I liked it and thought they did a good job showing these regular guys from the Empire's viewpoint.

  10. Sorry you got sick :-/ Feel better soon!

Re: the pulp cover, who opens a door while searching for danger but then looks the opposite direction? Lol.

I consider elves to be a type of fae, and I consider faeries a different type of fae (even though technically fae and faeries can be used interchangeably, I use fae as the all encompassing term). I don't think faeries generally have wings though. The little creatures with wings, I would call pixies. But really writers can do whatever they want. I just read a book that had elves with wings, so... Lol.

    1. Thanks! I'm feeling a lot better now... and yeah I thought the same thing. Look behind the door!!!

I consider elves as faeries too, or fae creatures I guess would be more precise. And yeah the little ones with wings I would call pixies too, or sprites. I actually consider elves to be shorter and more fae- like than the Tolkien version which is the taller more elegant type, but that's just me. Even though I like Tolkien. But yeah I kinda think those faire patrons were I don't know. I'll be nice.

I generally think faeries or fae (for me) are the encompassing term, and the small flighty ones can then be pixies, sylphs, whatever. But you're right, writers can pretty much do whatever. It's so open to interpretation. :)

  11. I hate getting sick. I've been in denial about it, but I might be coming down with something...scratchy throat and ears are a little achy.

Have to be well enough to get that flu shot when the flu clinic opens in a couple of weeks.

Enjoy your books...and your Netflix. Are you a Longmire fan?

    Thanks for visiting my blog.

  13. Sorry you got sick :( It's definitely the season for it. It seems everyone comes down with something at the end of Summer and at the end of Winter.

I see you got Replica! So interested to hear what you think of it. And I love the map you posted. There's something about maps. I always love books that have maps in the beginning. Somehow it makes me think that the author has put a lot of time and effort into the world building and I appreciate that a lot.

Hope you have a good week ahead and that you recover quickly!

  28. My whole family spent the last two weeks passing the back-to-school cold around. I think we're all better now.

Re: elves. vs. fairies--my kids will occasionally either tell me so "facts" about vampires or ask me specific questions about mythical creatures, and I always have to say, "You realize this is all made up, right?" As long as the internal rules of the specific story are obeyed, it's all good.

And I'm so embarrassed--i thought "Nerve" was "Never" until now. I guess I'm not very good at reading in mirrors.
