I've never read these but the cover artist is Michael Whelan and I always love his way of depicting otherwordly environments

    I have a copy of Crystal Singer by Anne McCaffrey, which is in the same colors/style as this, also by Michael Whalen, and it's one of my favorite (ever) sci-fi covers. I like that one slightly better than this one because it has jagged mountains/crystals in the background.

    This is a delightfully retro-sci-fi cover and I love it! It's fierce but other-worldly like you said^^
