This week's topic is Top Ten Books Not In My Usual Genre
I read mostly fantasy and some mysteries too- but this list has YA contemporary, historical fiction and even some adult contemp- stuff I don't normally read. In no particular order, here are my Top Ten books outside my usual zone.
Letters from Skye is not my typical read- a historical love story told entirely in letters.
I read this after seeing it recommended at Bea's Book Nook- a good thriller set in Japan.
I won this at Readerbuzz and it was one of my favorite reads of 2015.
A good read about two girls from England who join a yacht crew- everything is fine until someone dies.
What would you do with your last hours on Earth?
My favorite book of last year set in contemporary Australia.
This one was different but I liked it- about a bookstore that is more than it appears.
The sequel to Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick (see below). Perry and Gobi go to Europe and more craziness happens.
Tides is a YA with a paranormal slant (selkies) and was a good book.
This is a YA about an exchange student who turns out to be an assassin and a crazy night in New York City.
My first Lauren Oliver book, about a game played among high school students for money- a game that not everyone will survive.
I feel your not typical genres are the ones I tend to lean towards :) I LOVED Big Little Lies and enjoyed Panic. Great list!
ReplyDeleteBig Little Lies was so funny, I kept cracking up. Had no idea I would like it so much. :) And I enjoyed expanding my genres last year- I tried several new ones that were great!
DeleteMr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore is a lot of fun! I need to see if the author's written other books :)

DeleteThese all look really good! I have Mr. Penumbra's on my TBR but it's been there so long I've kind of forgotten about it! The Blue and Eight Hundred Grapes look fantastic and I've been meaning to read Big Little Lies for ages.
ReplyDeleteI almost forgot about it too- going through last years books I was like, oh yeah that one. :) It was good though and nicely different from a lot of stuff. I think Eight Hundred Grapes is just a nice book.

ReplyDeleteI liked Panic! I know it got somewhat mixed reviews but I enjoyed it- the premise was fun. I'd like to try more of her books...
DeleteI loved Letters From Skye and Eight Hundred Grapes! Oh, and Big LIttle Lies as well. I've had Mr. Penumbra on my Kindle for years now, and really must get to it. Looks like you did some great reading outside of your normal genres!

It was pretty good, not awrsome but a pretty good character study of two kids at the end of the world. Interesting. Tides I liked. I will definitely try that one, I always enjoy book recs! Thank you!

This is a great book, Greg. I haven't read any of the titles you list, but they all sound so interesting! Several are already in my TBR collection or on my wish list.

Ooh I want to read about selkies, so I'm gonna look up Tides. I know I've seen a lot of these on your blog before. I'm curious about Mr. Penumbra's (I mean, telling me it's about a bookstore with some mysterious secret is like dangling a shiny piece of bait in front of me lol), and I've already got Panic on my maybe TBR. I think a book told entirely in letters might be a little too far out of my comfort zone though.
ReplyDeleteTides was good and I thought there was a sequel coming, but I guess not. It'a a YA but it's pretty good. I like reading about sea creatures, mermaids (preferably nasty ones). Mr. Penumbra's was not what I was expecting, but it has some nice moments and I think it's worth a read. I thought it would be a little more mysterious, and it is a bit, but it's also contemporary. Hard to describe. :)
DeletePanic is a good maybe. Not an outstanding book but good enough, I liked the premise. Good enough that I ant to read more of her stuff. And yeah I've only read one book told in letters, and not something I'd want to do a lot. It was good though.
Some of these look really interesting! I've not read any of Lauren Oliver's novels despite her popularity, but Panic seems like an interesting (maybe "terrifying") read.

Of the ones on this list, All we have is now is my favorite. I do believe it was one of the best books I read last year. It was so beautiful and so thought provoking.

ReplyDeleteI haven't read ANY of these O.O *cringe* I have heard of Panic and Big Little Lies but they're not my usual go-to genre so I'd really have to be in the right kind of mood to get into them. I want to though, so hopefully someday...
ReplyDeleteI could never read All We Have Is Now because end of the world things freak me out. I was a basketcase for days after watching the movie Melancholia. I have had Penumbra's on my list to read forever. I hope I will get to it someday! I read quite a bit of Contemporary last year which is out of my comfort zone, but it isn't looking like I have that much, if any, coming up this year. Mysteries would be something I could read that would be way out of my comfort zone. Maybe I could read JKR's first mystery. :)
