Sunday Post #78

This week has been good, for the most part. I got some reading done and I have a few reviews planned for the Vintage Science Fiction challenge. It's a bit windy as I write this, but otherwise not much is going on.We still have a fair bit of snow but the temperatures have been warming, so it's melting a bit. It looks be a quiet weekend so hopefully I can get ahead on some of my reviews.

Little red Reviewer has a rundown of the Vintage reviews so far.

Tales Between The Pages has a Page to screen on Mockingjay.

Love the X- Men? Just curious? This is a good podcast

Read Me Away has a new installment of ReadPlayBlog.

Marni Bates has thoughts on the Stacey Jay kickstarter controversy, and I think she sums it up well.

  1. Still no snow and it was 60 today...I don't think I've seen Catching Fire yet. Mockingjay should be on DVD soonish so maybe I'll just wait and watch them together.

    1. I think they would go well together, especially since Catching Fire ended on a bit of a cliffhanger. It made me really want to go right in to Mockingjay and see what happens next. Wow you guys have warm temps- we were too but not quite that nice. :) Have a great weekend.

  2. Oh man, I haven't watched any of the classic Hawaii Five-o in for ever. My Grandfather and I use to watch them together...brings back memories. I am hoping we stay warm and avoid anymore snow. Hope your week is filled with awesome moments!

  3. We were still below freezing here today. Tomorrow (actually later today, lol) it is supposed to be near 40°, but it is going quickly back to teens and twenties on Monday. I have to catch up with the last two Hunger Games movies, myself. Have a terrific week.

  6. I am so jealous of the snow :( We haven't gotten any yet and it's freezing here. Today is a warmer day but it's suppose to rain. Yuck!

The covers of the Vintage SyFy are Fantastic. They make me think of the library when i was younger, I don't know why lol

I have yet to really watch the Hunger Games, I wasn't a fan of the books and I watched bits and pieces of the first one and just wasn't feeling it like the books.

    Have a great week Greg!

    1. I like the snow, but this time of year after the holidays I tire of it a bit and am ready for warm. I like the cover too- must be a nostalgia

I never read the books, did see the movie and thought it was okay, then saw this one and liked it- there's a few thing I don't get, like why would they do this or that, but by and large I'm enjoying them. I'm more curious than anything else, I guess, to see where it goes.

  9. I thought I'd read all of Andre Norton;s books, but I don't remember these. Of course, it was more years ago than I care to count so maybe I've forgotten them! I'll look forward to your reviews. And I have several books by Charles Finch to read. I need to start them. I hope you have a great reading week, Greg!

Thank you Jan and you have a great week too. I'm looking forward to anew mystery.

  11. I was into vintage sci fi when it was contemporary! Seriously how sad is that. I also remember vintage HI-5-O that way. I met the guy who was the second guy at a telethon once - cannot remember his name, just meeting him.

    1. I was too! Makes me feel old. :) Hawaii Five-O was always the show for me, not sure why, maybe the music, or that I wasn't supposed to watch it LOL. It is fun to revisit, although it has, um, aged a bit,,,

  12. Mr. Penumbra has been on my TBR for ages and I've had the Charles Finch for far too long. Netflix is a dangerous service! I end up watching way to much TV! We are having some warmer days here much to my relief. I don't love cold weather. Have a great week!

    1. I am also hoping to catch it before it goes off- but I'm running out of time. I was anxious to see Catching Fire too beforehand, and I'm glad I did, since I know the characters better now.

  14. Oooo, look at all that old-time Norton. Have fun! The Finch book looks good too.

I've been binge-watching mystery shows on NetFlix, such fun. But it's easy to get sucked in and lose time.

  19. Binge watching some old TV sounds alright. I wondered to myself whether I would be nostalgic and watch some old The Virginian shows but decided no, might spoil what I remember with fond remembrance.

  20. I like TV but not watching a lot of it. I prefer to take my Kindle to bed!

  21. I don't read a lot of vintage science fiction, but now I wish I did. Those books look really good. I'm thinking about binge watching the Doctor Who series, because I haven't seen those before. Enjoy Hawaii Five-O, and reading this week!

  22. The book events for January look pretty cool! I wish there was a Shuler's closer to me. Temps over here are warming a bit too, but we had a light dusting of snow last night that made everything pretty again. Lol.

  23. It's in the 50's today, and supposedly will get up into the 60's! I'm excited! It felt so nice outside and it's nice that the sun is finally back out. We didn't get any snow this winter, but there is still a chance that the weather will completely wonk out and we'll get snow in February. It's happened before...

  24. Just keep your snow up there, Greg! :) Looks like a great batch of reading for you this week! A Beautiful Blue Death looks interesting!

  27. What did you think of Catching Fire? I thought it was excellent, and so much better than THG. I was so happy that they got rid of the first director.

Mockingjay was pretty good, but I think the film was hurt a bit by having it split into two parts. I love the story so much that I will not complain about having too much of it, but I can see why people who aren't big fans would be disappointed. I do think Part 2 will be amazing.

    1. I liked Catching fire a lot, a big improvement over the first one. And I wanted to see Mockingjay immediately after finishing it, so I guess that cliffhanger worked! In fact, I may try to see it this week as it is still at the theater, but only one show time left.

  28. I still haven't seen Mockingjay. I'll probably wait till it is out on DVD. The only movie in the "trilogy" that I saw in theaters was The Hunger Games.

I like watching older TV shows on Netflix. My favorites that I've been watching recently are Friends, Gilmore Girls, and Keeping Up Appearances. I still haven't watched all the episodes of Friends so every once in awhile I come across something "new" to me which is fun.

I look forward to your thoughts on Mr. Penumbra. I've heard really good things about it.
