Jonny Quest 01x11

Jonny Quest: The Complete Original Series [Blu-ray]

Jonny Quest is one of my favorite cartoons but I've never seen all the episodes. Here I'll just be looking at the original series. I'm going to be sharing thoughts as I go.

Dr. Quest is doing research on how creatures respond to deep sea pressure in this one and the ridiculousness starts early. Bandit is doing some diving (seriously, why would they send a dog down?) and he swims right into a huge fish's mouth. Okaaay. And Dr. Quest finds a huge fish as well. And decides to measure its heartbeat. This one is meandering to start out. The undersea scenery is cool though. Oh, and the racially insensitive characterizations continue, sadly, with Jose on board their ship. Bandit growls at him so we know he's gonna be a bad guy.

Jonny is swimming alone (!) and finds a shipwreck, along with an old coin. They speculate that Jonny may be on to something, as there are rumors of a lost Spanish treasure ship in these waters, so Jose swings into action and notifies his pirate crew close by. They promptly capture the Quests' and force Jonny to dive back down to the shipwreck to find more gold. A police boat happens by but Quest can say nothing with Jonny's life at stake. They decide that night to send Hadji for help, since he can sneak through the porthole of the cabin they're locked in, but like an idiot Hadji is captured before he can escape. Bandit, though, comes through as he is hurled in the water but manages to swim to freedom! He gets a little help from his diving gear, naturally *eye roll*

Along come the police, and we have a nice little chase and naval battle. The pirates make a break for it, and in true Jonny Quest fashion, they don't just get captured- their boat gets blown up. Okay, then. That's sorted. And Bandit makes a friend along the way- a dolphin who helps him get to the police in time.

I give this one 3 of 5 stars.
