This week is Top Ten Books I disliked/ hated but am glad I read. I thought it might be hard coming up with ten, but after a little reflection I came up with some.
I love the idea of this book but I was pretty bored
I love the idea of this book but I was pretty bored
I love the idea- what do you do if the end of the world is imminent?- but the execution was just okay.
This was a good book, and I liked the beginning and the end, but I got bored in the middle. The love interest seemed a little too perfect as well.
This one just didn't wow me.
This one didn't do a lot for me but I liked the premise, and Paula Stokes is a good author. This one just wasn't my thing.
I didn't really like this but I was excited to read it. Glad I did I suppose.
Wasn't fond of this one either, but gods living in NYC? You gotta try right?
Kind of disappointing but I had to have it for the cover.
I didn't finish Girl Out of Water because it felt too young for me so it wasn't my thing either.
ReplyDeleteIt did seem to skew a bit younger?
DeleteWinter of the gods and Vicarious are on my list but didn't have much of a luck with them so far. Great list!

Yeah I had trouble with those too.
DeleteBite your tongue! Lincoln was too fabulous and I loved him so much. XD Girl Out of Water didn't blow me away, but I definitely enjoyed it, and Lincoln was a big part of that enjoyment for me. I have The Incident on the Bridge on my TBR. I was all over that cover. I am sad that you didn't enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteHa I'm glad you liked Linc (and Girl Out of Water generally). I actually liked it too, I liked her relationship with her dad and the whole staying in contact with her friends thing (although I think if I remember right I shipped her and her old boyfriend?) but it sort of lost me a bit in the middle. Still, a good book.
DeleteNice picks! The only one I read here was Vicarious! I did like this one more than I thought I would. Part of the appeal was that it took place in my hometown! Lol!
ReplyDeleteHere's my Tuesday Post
Have a GREAT day!
Old Follower :)
Oh yeah Vicarious was in St. Louis, wasn't it? I forgot that!
DeleteNice books Greg but sorry that you did not enjoy a few of them.
ReplyDeleteHa it happens :)
DeleteI haven't read any of these, but sorry to hear they weren't quite what you were hoping for! It's never fun to be disapointed by a book, but it happens.

Yeah it does!
DeleteGreat list! It can be so frustrating when the premise of a book sounds amazing but the execution doesn't do it justice.
ReplyDeletegreat list. I have been contemplating reading 20,000 leagues ever since I read Journey to the Center of the Earth.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd love Journey- I loved the old movie and th whole concept. Plus that cover art on the one you showcased a while ago grabbed me. :) 20,000 was a dud for me though, even though it WAS interesting at times.
DeleteI haven't read any of these but the idea of books you dislike but you're glad you read is pretty intriguing? I might make a similar post on my blog...
ReplyDeleteThis was a tough topic, but a lot of people took a swing at it and there were some interesting post!
DeleteI want to try Winter of the Gods, sorry you did not like it. I like the cover! haha Great list Greg!
ReplyDeleteMy TTT.
It is a super cover, for sure! And the first book The Immortals was good. Just didn't like where she went in the second one...
DeleteI do want to read Winter of Gods. I'm super interested in that whole series but sorry it didn't work for you. I've seen quite a few bloggers I trust not really like River of Teeth so I think I'll be passing on that one!
ReplyDeleteYeah River of teeth was a disappointment. And I really liked The Immortals, which was the first book of Winter of the Gods, but the second one just came down for me.
DeleteI didn't like the River of Teeth sample so I never read on with it. It still seems to get mixed reviews.
ReplyDeleteYeah wasn't impressed.
DeleteInteresting list--I'm fascinated this week by the number of classics showing up. Tastes change and to each his or her own. Lisa @

Yes classics can be hit or miss, and it's always interesting to see how one person can love a particular classic and someone else doesn't!
Delete20,000 Leagues bored me as well :( I was really hoping I'd love it.
ReplyDeleteSame here!!!!!!!1
DeleteI agree with you on The Passenger. I stuck with only because I was listening on audio and the narrator did a good job.
ReplyDeleteYeah I wanted to like that one SO much- the premise intrigued me and there were things about it I liked, but just as a whole... yeah it was disappointing.
DeleteI just ordered the Vicarious series from Book Outlet. I am a little bit worried that you didn't like the first book so much! However, if you are glad to have read it, then I feel a little bit better about it. ;)
ReplyDeleteOoh well I hope you like em! Vicarious does have a cool concept- I like the whole VR thing- and I haven't read the sequel, but I hope you like 'em!
DeleteI'll admit to not having read any of these and not really interested. Even if there are a few that I should
ReplyDeleteHa ha!
DeleteOh no! Winter of the Gods sounds so interesting! Too bad that you didn't like it :/
ReplyDeleteI know, I was bummed! Especially since I liked the first book...
DeleteSad that you didn't enjoy these! Some look intriguing!
ReplyDeleteI thought so, in fact several of these were must reads! You can't win em all I suppose!
Delete20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is the only book on this list I'm familiar with. And I agree with you. Jules Vern just doesn't pass the test of time like other authors. There's something about his pacing and character development which I cannot connect with. I love the concepts of all his works! I just don't want to keep reading them....
ReplyDeleteSame here. I love his concepts but just couldn't connect to 20,00 at all. I wanted to like it, and the Nautilus is awesome!
DeleteI haven't read any of these.
ReplyDeleteWell I'm going to be snarky and say- good choice!!!!!
DeleteI don't think I've read these ones but saw many movies for Jules Verne
ReplyDeleteYeah I do like movies based on his works.
DeleteI have not read a single one of these...now I wonder if I should. Have a great week. - Katie
ReplyDeleteSome are actually pretty good, they just didn't work for me in certain ways?
DeleteIs it bad that Winter of the Gods actually sounds really interesting to me now?
ReplyDeleteNo, I couldn't wait to read it! I mean the concept is there, it was just disappointing to me?
DeleteGirl Out Of Water is on my TBR but I'm sorry to hear the love interest was a bit too perfect. That tends to really annoy me when that happens.
ReplyDeleteIt's still worth a read, some people really liked it and a commenter above mentions she loved the love interest! And I liked the book overall but just had a few issues w/ it.
DeleteLove the cover of All We Have Is Now - too bad it didn’t really deliver.
ReplyDeleteI LOVED that cover, and it wasn't a bad book- I just wanted something else.
DeleteRiver of Teeth is one that I've been interested in for ages, but I always see people saying similarly not great things about it and being disappointed, so I haven't ever picked it up. 20,000 Leagues was pretty disappointing to me as well. It had some strong moments, but many parts were a bit of a slog.
ReplyDeleteI still need to read The Immortals. Thanks for the reminder! I felt the same way about All We Have is Now.
ReplyDeleteI still don't understand why you have an alternate history book about hippos and then barely talk about the freaking hippos. The hippos are the whole shtick, right? I kind of liked All We Have Is Now, but it definitely wasn't what I expected- I had hoped for something a little more... apocalypse-y.
ReplyDeleteAw, sad to see the Olympus Bound trilogy didn't end on a better note. And I'm with you on River of Teeth. I know a lot of people loved it, but I wasn't that blown away by it either.

I tried to read Verne as a kid (12-13 years old) but his writing style didn't grip me at all. My dad loves some of his books, I guess we don't have that in common XD

I was really curious about Girl Out of Water, but never did end up reading it. I'm not particularly fond of the perfect love interest trope.
ReplyDeleteI remembered the disappointment in Girl Out of Water. It's always annoying when a book doesn't live up to it's cover. This was a fun topic but I had no luck thinking of any of them!
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me that I still haven't gotten around to Girl Out of Water yet. I might save it until the summer now since that cover always makes me think of it as a beach read. Curious to see if I love it or hate it.
ReplyDeleteOh no, you didn't like River of Teeth? I have an eARC of American Hippo (which is the combined novellas). Well, at least you didn't *hate* it, so that's good lol. And I know you were excited for Winter of Gods before you read that one, so that's a bummer it didn't turn out like you hoped!
ReplyDeleteI've seen Girl Out of Water around the blogosphere, but haven't really given it a second glance. Looks like one I might want to take a look at. Thanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland, Greg.
ReplyDeleteAhh lots of promise but poor follow through. Too bad, really.
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha, River of Teeth still slays me. 😂
ReplyDeleteI still want to try Vicarious even though I've seen mixed reviews for it.
