Sunday Post #224

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

This week the big news was snow, and lots of it. We had a winter storm warning about midweek and that added to the snow we already had. It's been beautiful but rough on the roads. Other than that not a lot happening, it's just been cold. Gearing up for Christmas too which is getting very close...

I finished The Hunger Games this week and loved it, and am now on to Catching Fire. Really why didn't I read this any sooner? And I'm sorta re- evaluating my TBR, in the sense that... I noticed that in the last year or two I've been jumping on a lot of the new releases, but as I was reviewing my next few reads I was like- do I really want to read these? Only marginally, in some cases. So yeah I may adjust.

Last week I reviewed Tintin in Tibet, an older review that I sorta redid, and also talked about my reading challenges and how I did. I also got caught up on my tags with the Mystery Blogger Award and shared my Top Ten books of 2017. So  a pretty good week. This coming week I'm re- reviewing Eight Hundred Grapes, and maybe the new Star Wars movie (speaking of, who's going to see it this weekend???)

  1. Nice rewriting some older reviews. I did that a while back, too, when I was in a reading slump. Not only did it help have some content on my blog, but it brought me right out of the slump as well.
Have a wonderful weekend Greg! Enjoy those books.

    1. I'm hoping it will help with me too. Frankly I'm kinda sick of all the new books, I want to relax and revisit some older ones.

  2. We had snow too! It was fun and then you realised you had to get to work and it was less fun, especially as we had a cold snap so it turned to ice. I've done panic shopping this week to get myself sorted for Christmas, I have just one more gift to buy. Glad you're enjoying The Hunger Games books, I have a serious rereading urge going on.

    1. Snow is fun! Until you have to drive in it- exactly. And I have a few presents to get as well, glad you're almost done! Ooh yeah re read em!!! :)

  3. I like that Breakfast at Tiffany's trailer a lot! I know it's tough on the roads for people who have to get to work, but something about the snow just seems to really make it seem so much like Christmas and the holidays. One thing that I've found myself doing is looking at the Yule Log that they show on tv. Yes, I know that's strange. (lol) Happy Saturday! RO

    1. I do too. And I've never seen it, so... now is the time! And I definitely think snow adds to the holiday spirit, especially for me. And yay for the Yule log- don't think it's strange at all.

  4. I did read the Hunger Games ones. Happy reading and have a nice weekend

  5. It's been cold and snowy here this week, too, really kind of early in the season for it, though! Sometimes I also feel like I add stuff to my TBR just because of hype or because it's new, and not necessarily because I really want to read it!

    1. Yeah a little early here too. We often get some on december but not a weeks worth or more! And I feel the same way about my TBR.

  6. I want to do a reread via audio of the Hunger Games next year. It's been almost eight years since I read it. I would love to get to more backlist books too. We had snow this week too. Not a ton but more than I care for. I HATE driving with snow. Have a great week!!!

    1. Wow eight years! I can't believe it's taken me THIS long to read it. I like the snow but driving in it- no!

  7. I want snow! Please send some to California and put put the fires:-/ I have so much to do still to get ready for Christmas, I can't believe how fast it snuck up on me!

    1. I would love to! And those fires- so awful. Hope you're not anywhere near em. And Christmas did come fast- I have stuff t do too.

  8. I read The Hunger Games and really liked it but didn't read anymore because I liked how the world was at the end of the first one if that makes any sense. I'm doing some reevaluating on my reading too. I've got so many books that I want to read that are disappearing under the piles of new releases! I love that Agatha Christie cover. I thought I was familiar with all the types of covers on her books but that's completely new to me! Have a great week!

    1. Yup, that totally makes sense. I'm continuing on because they were gifted to me, and I'm really curious to see what happens next, but I totally get that. And I feel the same way- I need to reevaluate my TBR a bit.

I really liked that Christie cover and had to use it, it is so different! Almost like a country house story but it doesn't even look like a mystery??

  9. STAR WARS!!!!! I am going to go see it Sunday. When will you see it? I have never seen Breakfast at Tiffany's. There are some other classic movies I want to see as well. Gone with the Wind, Casablanca to name a few.

    1. I have seen it, and I didn't like it! Although I hope you do!! Same here with Tiffany's, but I have seen casablanca and like it.

  10. We have gotten hardly any snow! I’m so disappointed. Is this your first time reading The Hunger Games?

    ReplyDelete
  11. SNow comes and goes here, right now we have some

  12. I am not ready for snow and am very glad that my area has avoided it so far. I seem to only be reading ARCs but have a lot of older books that I want to get to. I need to re-evaluate my tbr as well. Have a great week!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oh jealous of the snow! We were supposed to get a little bit but nothing here. It is a bit rough if you have to go out driving in it for sure, though.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yeah, why didn't you read them sooner? (I am absolutely giving you an "I told you so" look at the moment. Of course.) I think it's a great idea to reevaluate sometimes. I have done that- looked at my list and wondered why I ever added some of them. Probably the Hype Monster. I like the idea of re-reviewing! I mean, I am lucky to review crap the first time around, but I like the idea for other people :D I assume this means you saw Star Wars? How was it? You know I did not, since I wasn't even terribly great at telling it apart from Star Trek hah. Also, movies. But literally everyone on my Twitter feed and such is seeing it, it seems!

    ReplyDelete

    1. I know??!? Funny that. :) And yeah I had a list of stuff I "wanted" to read and ralized... I was enthused about none of it. So... yeah. I am going to re- review definitely since some books I really liked and, you know, back when I started maybe three people read it??

I did see Star Wars, and... argh.

  20. I agree, I've actually been thinking about it, and reached the sane conclusion. We just get so carried away with ARCs, don't we? But what about those good books we already own, but haven't read? So I was also thinking of reading more of my well known owned books. For that matter, I haven't actually read The Hunger Games yet either :) but I don't own it. Maybe one day.
    Have a great week :)

  21. Breakfast at Tiffany's is such a classic! Love it!!! We had more snow, twice this week, but I am happy the other snow had already melted, so no pile up. I always stick a few older books on my weekly TBR to give me a little break, and well, I should read the books I own every once in a while. When I read my old reviews, I think I used to be better at it than I am now. LOL!

  22. I've been hearing so many good things about the Star Wars movie, but I still haven't seen the whole series yet. So, I better binge watch on Star Wars soon!

  23. I'm a big fan of The Hunger Games series and I hope to get to reread it at some point soon plus I need to catch up on the films. Next year my reading plan will focus on the things I most want to read instead of going for those that I'm trying to get off the shelves. I think there will be a lot more apocalypse reads and less of this modern UF which is too heavy on romance for me.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I might have to try redoing some reviews. That might help keep things fresh and incase anyone missed a review you can showcase the book again.
We had snow this week, not accumulation but falling from the sky by the next day it would melt. This week is going to be warmer and It's getting on my nerves lol
I have a Out with the Old and In with the New post about my reading for next year. I am have such a hard time with ARCs and adding books to my TBR only to realize I don't think I ever really wanted to read them. So I am doing things a lot differently this year coming up. I think it will help avoid a slump also.

I hope you have a great week, Greg! Happy Reading! :)

  25. I am sure some of my really old reviews could use a freshen up, never really thought of that! Hope you find a way to stay warm with all that nasty snow up there! :) So far we have been lucky with no snow but I am sure it will hit us eventually. :(

    Have a great week!!

  26. You get snow, I get a heatwave... no fair. :) Hearing how much you enjoyed The Hunger Games kind of makes me want to do a re-read of the whole trilogy. I'm not sure I'll see the new Star Wars movie. I'm a total purist and for me Star Wars will always be the original three movies from the late 70s/early 80s. That's what I went to the theater to see as a kid and everything else just feels kind of second-rate.

  27. We had a lot of snow this week, too. The kids loved having the day off of school. I loved The Hunger Games. Eight Hundred Grapes is on my TBR. And I, too, have started reading books that are waiting for me on my shelves, whether they are new releases or not. So many books to read!!!

  28. I can relate to your re-evalution of your TBR pile. Lately, I've been looking at all the books I've amassed over the years that I still haven't read, and I really want to start getting through those as well as reading new releases. So I think in 2018 I'm going to attempt to go "50/50" with my reading. Hopefully, it works :) New releases can just be so tempting sometimes lol Also, this has reminded me that I still haven't finished The Hunger Games Trilogy - I read the first book as soon as it came out, and I even bought the second and third but I still haven't read them Yet another case of I need to read my older books. Have a great week, Greg! :)

    1. Yes! Same here. I'm going to scale back maybe a bit on new releases? Or just be more discerning on which ones I really want to read ha! And it's funny how many other people haven't read the Hunger Games yet- I thought I was the last one maybe.

  29. Urg - snow! Best of luck with that - though I'm guessing you're better prepared than we are for the white stuff. I'm delighted you enjoyed The Hunger Games so much - I loved all three books and thought they had lots to say that is so relevant, alongside the adventure story. Hope the coming week is a good one - and stay warm!

  30. I have had to rethink some of my book picks, too; I have selected a few that others were buzzing about...and then found them uninspiring...and ultimately slogged my way through.

I do have favorite authors, so their books will always be my first choice. I should keep my buying of untried authors to a minimum.

Does that sound like a rut? No...the rut for me has been buying what others like, without being sure I will enjoy the books, too.

Like Sing, Unburied, Sing...everyone was raving. I didn't make it past Chapter One! I usually give a book more...and that one seemed like I should have liked it: poverty, drug-addiction, dysfunctional families...but I didn't connect with it.

Enjoy the snow! I am still glad that I am close to the mountains and can "visit" the snow instead of living in it.

Thanks for visiting my blog...and have a great week.

    1. Yeah I'm going through a phase where a lot of the stuff I thought I wanted to read- I didn't. So my TBR is getting all switched around! And I agree- some authors are an auto buy.

And I agree that I get a lot of recs from blogs, and while some work out, you're right, others aren't for me at all.

  39. It's finally cooling down here in Southern California, but the winds were terrible today. I wish we'd get some rain to help with all these fires! I'm sure snow, as beautiful as it is, presents its own trials.

I wish I was going to see the new Star Wars movie. I'm a die-hard fan, but my husband is not so much so I'll probably end up seeing it when it comes out on DVD. That's okay, with high def, large screen TVs the quality of the picture is pretty great and I can wear my comfy PJs to watch. I call that a win win, lol. :)

  40. I would have loved that snow storm. Living in the Bay Area, I have to go out of my way to find snow. A real snowstorm would have been something unique for me. I understand if other people might not have the same opinion.:D

OMG you read TinTin - I think I read them all when I was young. TinTin, Lucky Luck and Asterix were my comic books when I grew up.

And funny enough, Agatha Christie as well. I watched all the old movies on TV and even read a few of the books. I'm waiting to get the audiobook for Murder on the Orient Express - It's going to be awesome!!! And afterwards I'll watch the movie. :D

I really liked Hunger Games and Catching Fire but I never read book 3. I'm like you by adding YA series to my tbr because they are being talked about everywhere but in the end I rarely read them. I have a hard time swallowing the doom and gloom that comes with many YA novels. Some authors like V E Schwab work for me, others like Sarah J Maas don't.

    But I'll keep trying. :D

Have a great week and happy reading!!

Yes Tintin is great! I loved 'em as a kid. And I need to read Christie- I think I tried one as a kid but there are so many that look good.

I'm in Catching Fire now. I've heard some mixed things about book three so it seems like the most problematic of the three? And I agree about YA titles- some work for me and some definitely don't. :)

  46. We've had snow predicted but it seldom materializes. Storms, thankfully, keep missing Duluth. I agree that sometimes the new and shiny can overwhelm other books.
