Sunday Post #176

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

The first week of 2017 has been snowy and cold. A quiet week though, not a lot happening. The holidays are over and although I like the holidays generally I'm glad they're over. Ready to see what the new year brings.

I was thinking with the New Year about when I started blogging and it surprised me to realize my first post went up in August of 2012. I didn't realize it had been that long. However after that first post I don't think I posted again until March of the following year! I was still figuring out what I wanted the blog to be. So my blogoversary is... ? I guess technically it's August. What does this have to do with anything? Well, nothing! lol but it does mean I've been blogging longer than I thought.

Looking a little closer it's been about three and a half years that I've been blogging. It took a while to figure out what I wanted to do with this thing. Looking back (and some of those posts are awful) it's amazing to see so many people that started when I did, more or less, still around- people come and go but a lot are still here. Kinda cool. Anyway, on to this week. Reading wise I read Lost Girls and loved it. That's a killer book, I'm glad I snapped it up. Speaking of which, my first review of 2017 was Starflight- a good way to start.

Starflight (Starflight, #1)Lost Girls

Song of the  day

Last Weeks Stuff:

I did a Cover Characteristics post featuring Nights in the City. Tuesday Tagline looked at a rather chilling tagline from one of my favorite books, and Top Ten Tuesday was all about the debuts, although I modified it slightly. I also talked about The Shire and reviewed Starflight as well. A pretty good week, all told. And I took a new look at a classic cover in Bookcover Spotlight #82.

Next Week:

Cover Characteristic will feature Islands this week. Tuesday Tagline will look at an upcoming book I'm looking forward to and Top Ten Tuesday looks at stuff we missed in 2016. Then I'm looking at Rivendell in my discussion post and reviewing Lost Girls.

  1. I love the contrast between the dragons and ducks! I like the idea of taking part in Cover Characteristic but finding the time to look through all my books for that theme might take up too much time. If I can blog ahead I might think about it but I'll see how it goes!

Lost Girls looks great, I'll definitely look out for it.
    I like those pics, too!

  5. We got a bit of snow yesterday and since I live in Dallas it's a big deal. I took me about 2 hours to get home from work, when it normally takes me 30 minutes at most, 15 with no traffic. I hate cold weather :(

I'm coming up on four years in July - so we started at around the same time. How cool! My first posts were pretty rough as well. I feel like my blog is constantly changing and evolving - not sure any two years have looked remotely the same lol.

    Have a great week :)

  6. We had our first snow today as well and honestly I'm not a fan ;) I'm ok with cold and rain, but snow not so much.
Oh wow, that's great that you've already been blogging for about 3,5 years! Congrats!
Oh, and I really like the art with the dragons and the ducks - it's such a cool contrast.

    1. I'm not either, I mean I don't mind a little snow for the holidays, but I'm over it. :) And I know! 3.5 years- when did THAT happen??

I like the art too- I thought the same thing!

  8. You have the best art! I have the same issue with the blogoversary. I guess technically my official one is August of 2013 but I didn't start regularly posting and putting effort into it until January of 2014 so which one do I pick? I guess it's really up to us! Love the Disney Princess workout video! Pocahontas is Cassie Ho and I've used her Blogilates workout videos before and she's crazy! That was a lot of fun. Have a great week!

    1. Thanks! You'd think it would take time to find, but I almost always stumble on it either through a website or lately Pinterest (which is LOADED with it, good grief). And yes- I posted like 3 reviews and then didn't post again for months lol. So yeah I guess we can pick. :)

      I loved that video.

  9. Greg! The art this week is just stunning. I actually want prints! I'm bookmarking this one to check out later when I'm back at home with more time (and a big screen!)

You've also made me want to delve deep into your blog archives to check out your very first posts ;)

Will visit more as soon as I get the chance. Hope you have a wonderful week.

    1. Thank you. I often find some of the art is stuff I want to- and sometimes prints are available! when they're not, I'm like aw man...

  10. Thanks for the art as usual-- the female on the horse is awesome!

I want to join cover characteristics sometimes but who is supplying the weekly topics or do we make up our own for now?

I have a blogversary issue too, because I've had 4 (count 'em, 4)different book blogs over maybe 6 years. I just don't celebrate my date, because between switching blog names and platforms and taking hiatuses, I don't have a logical starting off point :)

  11. I'm up to 8 years of blogging this month but my blog's had many iterations since its inception. As you said... it took a while to work out what I wanted to do with it.

And I love that pulp cover. They really remind me of my childhood and teen years when I got glimpses of books adults read around me and when I first started to go to second hand bookstores!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Wow 8 yrs is awesome! And I get it- multiple iterations or even multiple blogs can make it difficult to know when to consider a beginning! And some of those old covers do bring back memories- the bookstands were so different I think back then.

  13. I hate winter. It is very cold here. We are supposed to get a few inches of snow Monday night and then freezing rain on Tuesday. I wish I was in Australia where it is summer!

This month marks 7 years of my blog. I am surprised it's still going sometimes!

I will have to read your review of Starflight. I liked that one and I'm looking forward to the sequel. Did you read Alienated?

    1. I'm so sick of winter too. Just over it. I wouldn't mind being in Australia right about now.

Happy 7 years ! Wow that's an accomplishment! I have not read Alienated or anythig else by Landers, this was my first.

  15. I started blogging in 2008...had one blog, and did very little with it. Then a year later, I seemingly stumbled upon the blogging community and started going strong. I added blogs...a lot of them. Then, finally, merged most of them until I now have six. Still a lot, I guess, but it works for me.

I love that image of the Emerald Forest.

  16. GREAT post, Greg!! Have I already wished you a Happy New Year? If not, I'm wishing it now, lol.

You say you're glad the holidays are over, but I'm a little sad.... I always feel this way at the beginning of January. I LOVE Christmas!!! So it's such a letdown when it's time to put away all the decorations, and get on with "business as usual". (Besides, my 2-week vacation ends today, boo-hoo....)

How I wish that we could have snow here for Christmas!! I live in Miami, Florida, where Santa visits on a surfboard! Haha!! I HATE when we have 80-degree weather on the 25th!!

I haven't gone back recently to look at my early posts, but some of them were kinda bad, in the formatting sense. I've always tried to write interesting posts, but perhaps some of them might strike me as not all that interesting nowadays....lol.

I'm REALLY looking forward to your review of "Starflight"!! I want to read that one myself! As for "Lost Girls", I really do need to check it out further on Goodreads.

"Window Seat" is a great song, and that Princesses video is really cute!

What has REALLY blown me away is all the art by Velhagen!!! I especially like the picture of the fighting white horses, and the very last one, depicting the woman warrior. That horse is MAGNIFICENT!! I need to look up this artist on the Internet!

I'll be checking out your previous posts, too.

BTW, thanks for entering my "Beautiful Cover Giveaway"!! GOOD LUCK!! And one more thing....I published my very first "Sunday Post" today!!! Hope you can come by and take a look!

    Happy Sunday!! :D

    1. Hey Maria! You know I usually AM sad when the Christmas time is over, but for some reason I'm glad it's over this year. And you can have some of our snow! I'd love to have some Miami weather right about now!

I was a little surprised by some of my older posts... I may need to go back and do some editing lol.

I liked starflight. And I hope you read Lost Girls- I thought it was great! And I love the art too, although the last one wasn't by him but a different artist- I found it on Pinterest. I should have been clearer on thats.

Glad you joined the Sunday Post!!

I don't envy you the snow one little bit - I'm crossing my fingers and hoping we don't get any as this country is only really set up for drizzle and if we get anything else that deviates from that scenario, the place quickly grinds to a standstill... Love the dragons and ducks and your post featuring nighttime in the city. Have a great week, Greg and once more, many thanks for the marvellous artwork:)

I saw that EVERYWHERE in Michigan was getting these little fingers of snow last week b/c of the wind but it missed us practically. I was down in Detroit on Wed and it was hard to see where I was going but other than that, it missed Port Huron. With the lake on the right of us, a lot of weather goes around us.

    1. I don't think I did either! I mean of course I did but it hitting 2017 is what got me thinking... but this blog sat for months at one point so I'm not even sure I should count that. :)

Seems like everyone is getting cold! My desk is by a window so it's a bit chilly when it's this cold out. I may need a space heater!

  50. My blog has changed a lot too over the years - I think that's natural as we grow and change over time, too! Here's to many y more years of reading, writing, blogging and sharing!

  51. I've been waiting to see what you thought of Starflight - so glad you liked it! Not too long again until Starfall. I like the last two pieces of artwork you shared.

Have a lovely week, Greg! =)

  52. Hi Greg - wishing you a happy blogging anniversary, a great moment to celebrate! Here's to many more!

Thanks for sharing your Emerald Forest picture - I just love it.

The Lost Girls looks like a great read, it caught my eye so I'm putting it on my wishlist.

Happy reading and stay warm this week :-)

  53. I definitely get what you mean about being glad the festive season is over and keen to see what the new year brings. Whilst I love the festive season, and it is such a small portion of the year, in many respects it can feel like the longest time! I hope the new year is treating you well so far!

Looking back on your blogging history is always interesting.

Ooo... I'm keen to see your book review of Lost Girls. Happy reading!

  54. I wouldn't mind the crazy, crazy cold we have it only there were some snow. Nope, just really cold. :) I'm continually surprised that I'm still blogging. I started my blog in 2008 on a whim. Who knew I'd make friends and have so many great opportunities? Or that I'd still be here.

  55. We didn't get snow down here, even though our state in the northern area got the rare accumulation. We did get rain and ice, which I great despise, but thankfully it cleared up quickly without incident for these locals who aren't equipped to remove it or to drive on it.
I am looking forward to hearing what you think of The Wanderer. I think I have a copy.

  56. There's nothing wrong with a quiet week... they seem especially welcome right after the holidays! Same snow and cold here. I'm counting the hours until we head south (tomorrow if our daughter is feeling better.) Have a good week!

  57. I'm going to have to watch that Disney Princesses video. Lol. Some days I get kind of lost in Youtube land!

    Lost Girls looks really good!

We had the cold here, but no real snow. :( It was a bummer. I feel like if its going to be cold we should at least have snow! Lol.

  58. Dang Greg, you've been blogging a long time! I also have difficulty determining my blogoversary since I started in 2013 but didn't actually comment on anyone else's blog until 2014...so I was basically just sending my reviews out into the void, LOL.

As always, the art you've included in this post is totally awesome!

  59. It's good to think back and reflect on when you started your blog. i would have guessed you'd been blogging for a lot longer. I started my book blog Dec 2012 and wondered at the time how to find a book bloggers world after blogging in the education sphere with my class for so long. I found it though! Hope your normal week and reading go well.

  60. I'm with you in that I enjoy the holidays but I'm glad when they're over and things return to normal. I am so intrigued by the synopsis of Lost Girls. Glad it was such a hit with you.

  61. I've been blogging on Ms. Martin Teaches Media since Dec. 30, 2009. That is when I decided to separate my adult reading and my YA reading into two separate blogs. My first blog (Inside of a Dog) began as a project to learn about Web 2.0 tools and had a long gap in between the end of that project and my current book blogging. I'm almost afraid to go back and look at those early posts. I hope I've grown as a blogger and writer. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  62. Happy New Year! I'm enjoying Lost Girls at the moment. I hope you like it too. And thank you for the Disney princesses at the gym video. I really enjoyed watching it. :D Have a great week!

  63. Wow! I have never heard of this cover meme. I might have to look into it.
I saw the Disney princess at the gym video recently, and I love that you posted it.
The art you posted is really cool. Thank you for posting.

  65. It's been freezing here too! We had -32C a few nights ago! :O Brrrr! Despite loving the Holidays too, like you I'm excited to see what the new year brings :) All the best to you my friend in 2017 xx

  66. Lost Girls is one that I've definitely been thinking about reading. Will have to go read your review. Hope you have a good week! Thanks for stopping by my Sunday Post on Lisa Loves Literature earlier!

  67. End-of-year reflections are the best. :) Congratulations on maintaining your blog for so long! And yeah, those first posts are usually terrible, I don't even want to go read mine. It takes a while to find your blogging voice or whatever.

And thanks for that Disney princess video, it's awesome! :D

  68. I think you can celebrate your blogoversary whenever you want to. I think it's impressive that you've been around for over four years (or just under, depending on how you want to count it). I'm always surprised how many blogs seem to disappear from the blogosphere.

  69. Happy not quite Blogoversary!!! The snow hit here today quite badly and everyone has resorted to driving like lunatics who have never seen snow before. I saw that Disney Princess keep fit video too, it was fab!
