Top Ten Books I Read Because of Recommendations

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week a new Top Ten list will be posted. Everyone is welcome to join. Link back to The Broke and the Bookish so everyone can check out other bloggers' lists. It's a fun way to get to know fellow bloggers.

This week's topic is Books I Read Because of Recommendations. The recs can be from bloggers or other sources or whatever. I'm going to go with books I've read AND books I haven't but plan to- all based on recommendations from bloggers. Cause let's face it, because of other bloggers I have a ton of books I want to read that I might not even have heard of.

Starflight (Starflight, #1)

Totally a recommendation

Bright Smoke, Cold Fire (Untitled, #1)

Cover love. Plus recommendations from a ton of bloggers= I need to read this.

The 100 (The 100, #1)

This is one I've been told not to read lol because it's supposedly pretty bad, or at least not on par with the show. And I love the show, so I'm curious. I know it's very different. Will I? Not sure...

City of the Lost (Casey Duncan, #1)

I read this basically because of recommendations- it's not a book I would have even seen, possibly, without other bloggers. And it was good!

The Girls

I loved this book

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, #1)

So many people have recommended this to me, and to be honest I started it once but never finished. I just got sidetracked. So I need to get back to it.

Panic

This was my first book by Lauren Oliver and I liked it. Everyone says though to read...

Before I Fall

this one as it's supposedly her best book?

  2. I'm SUPER curious about The 100 as well! I also heard bad reviews, but I do love the show, so I still kinda want to give it a try...

  3. I have Starflight, just haven't read it yet. And I've been wanting to read Panic for forever! Gah, you just reminded me...so now is that your fault if I read it? Lol!

    1. Yes it's all my fault! I know Panic has some mixed reviews, I liked it but who knows? I hope you do if you read it.

  4. I didn't get to join in on this week's TTT (ran out of time due to get my post together) but this is a really good topic! Bummed I picked this week to get behind in schoolwork! LOL
I actually read on Twitter today that the next book in Lander's series won't have any ARCs so everyone is throwing a fit! I have not read this series yet, but after all the hype I need to find a copy and start it!
    Great post Greg!

    1. Aw I know how TTT can be, sometimes it takes a while to put these together. No ARC's? Interesting- I didn't know that. That will ruffle a few feathers ha ha!

  5. I LOVE the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy! The later books in the series weren't as great but that first book is genius! I read Starflight thanks to recommendations as well although I didn't include it on my list. I haven't read Before I Fall because I just know it's going to make me cry and I need to be in the right mood for it!

    1. I need to get into Hitchhiker's, and Starflight too. Is Before I Fall a sad read? I might not be as anxious for it if so, but I've heard so many good things I should probably go ahead and read it.

  6. I also really want to read Bright Smoke, Cold Fire AND I've heard the same about The 100 - I too like the TV show so would like to give the book that it's based on a chance, because you know, BOOKLOVER over here.

I need to try more of Oliver's books since I enjoyed Replica, and I've never read an Armstrong but I want to!! Oh my poor TBR. ;)

    1. The TV show is awesome. You should check out Snark from the ARC over at It Starts at Midnight when the show comes back- she and some other bloggers do hilarious recaps/ reviews of the episodes.

I know right- too many books. :)

  7. I've been told by several people to read City of the Lost which is odd because I've devoured her Cainsville series and Otherworld series. I'm hoping my library gets Bright Smoke, Cold Fire soon so I can grab it. Nice list Greg!

    1. I liked City of the Lost a lot, and it was my first Kelley Armstrong. there was no paranormal in it (maybe a hint) but it was a good thriller, I'm really looking forward to the next one. and maybe she'll sneak some mysteriousness in... :)

  9. I love The 100 too, but so many readers have said that's just not nearly as good. It makes me afraid. I don't want my love of the show tainted, haha.

    1. I know, I'm the same way. I don't want to ruin the show if the book sucks. :)

  10. I have both Starflight and Bright Smoke, Cold Fire on my TBR piles, and I need to get to them. I think most of my TBR pile is from book recommendations.

    1. I do too, isn't that funny? Once you start blogging you get inundated with recommendations, and all the reviews... it's hard to keep up. :)

  11. I just FINALLY read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for the first time! My review will be up Friday :D I haven't read any of the others here but The 100, Starflight and all the Lauren Oliver are on my tbr shelf!

  12. I'm going to have to run out and get the Lisa Jewell book. She's an author that I've been mighty curious about but too scared to try out. If you loved it, I'll give that book a go. I'm curious about City of the Lost too.

    1. That is one of the best covers out there. And I really liked City of the Lost.

  14. I haven't seen Bright Smoke Cold Fire before (where have I been?) but that cover! Gorgeous. Hope the inside measures up to the outside. :) I used to read everything Lisa Jewell wrote but I hit a bumpy patch with the last one I read by her (The House We Grew Up In). I think it's time to pick up another so maybe I'll get The Girls.

  15. I still need to read Panic. I LOVE Lauren Oliver and YES Before I Fall was the best I've read from her (so far). I've gone back and forth on whether I want to read The 100. I watched the first few episodes of the show and I wasn't really wowed :( It's still a maybe. Great list!

    1. I like Panic but I know it got some mixed reviews. It's the only book I've read of hers although I'm in Replica at the moment. I've heard Before I Fall is REALLY good though.

The 100 is so awesome but you have to get through the first few episodes. It seems very teen angsty for lack of a better word at first, but once it gets rolling it gets a lot better. And the 2nd season is awesome!

  16. I think I will have to look at the Jewell book - I've seen it on a couple of lists this week so I'm thinking it must be worth picking up! I really liked Before I fall - I haven't read the other book you have on your list though so I can't compare them - it's a high school type of book with a groundhog day feel and a good look at consequences.

  22. The City of the Lost was not a book I would have picked up on my own either, had it not for the fact I'd wanted to try KA for a long time and one of my blogger friends had nothing but good things to say about this particular book. I liked the sound of it so I decided to try it, and I ended up loving it too!

    1. Oh that's cool. I kinda had the same experience, I've been wanting to try urban fantasy and her name keeps popping up. Even though this one isn't UF I still decided to try it- the premise and the cover jumped out at me. And I liked it a lot!

  23. New follower. I enjoyed Before I Fall, but Panic wasn't a win for me. Hope you have a great week!

  24. That Bright Smoke Cold Fire Cover - Phew! That's gorgeous and does make me want to read it. Covers do matter... Do you do audio books? If so you might consider giving the audio of Hitchhiker's Guide read by Stephen Fry a shot - It's a sock knock-er off-er!

  25. and.. I haven't read any even if I heard about them

  26. Great list! I've seen Starflight on a couple of lists now. I need to look that one up. Before I Fall and Delirium are definitely Lauren Oliver's best books.

  27. I saw a bad review for Bright Smoke, Cold Fire by a blogger I usually agree with, while the eARC was still up on Netgalley, so I did not request it. Then closer to its pub date I started seeing tons of 4 and 5 star reviews. I went back to request it and they had already archived it, so I snossed and lost. *cue sad music* I hope the ebook goes on special after Christmas.

  28. Ohhh Bright Smoke Cold Fire is soooo good. I loved that book!

  29. Please read The 100. Just so you can review it and talk about it. That's purely selfish. I I agree that Before I Fall is fabulous. I do not agree that Bright Smoke Cold FIre is, sadly. That book and I... we did not get along. I need to read Starflight, but tbh, I'm mostly in it for the cover. Curious about City of the Lost too! Great list!

    1. I'm tempted to read The 100 just so I can rip on it! Isn't that awful? But what if...gasp... I like it? Ack!! I know that's unlikely but with my luck I'd like it and then have to defend the thing lol. Although from what I've heard (and your review reinforced this) I don't have to worry about that too much! I'm kinda leaning towards reading it actually, but I'm also kinda afraid it'll muddle the characters in my head

  30. Quite a few of those are on my TBR, like both Lauren Oliver books and The 100. I had no idea that Kelley Armstrong branched out into mystery genre! Her Women of the Otherworld series is on my TBR! Great list, and I'm adding a few of those to my Wishlist :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Starflight and Cold Fire, Bright Smoke are both on my TBR pile. I still need to read that Kelley Armstrong book as well. I made it through Hitchhiker's Guide by listening to it on audio. If you get the chance, maybe give listening to it a shot?

  32. I read Starflight and really liked it. It was reminiscent of the Firefly TV show, if you are familiar with that.
