The Girl From The Sea

The Girl from the Sea

The Girl From The Sea was kind of an impulse buy for me, I saw it on a blog somewhere and the cover got my attention. The premise also appealed to me- a woman recovered from the sea, with no memory of what happened to her, trying to piece her life together- and having to navigate the lies of those closest to her. What's not to like? So I gave it a shot- and I'm glad I did. It was different than I expected, but I blew through it and it kept me wondering- what really did happen to her?

Mia has no memory of anything before her accident- if it was an accident. The circumstances are certainly suspicious- but her boyfriend soon shows up and she starts to piece together her life. I was expecting a story where everyone close to her was lying or had a secret- and that was sort of the case, but it played out different than I expected. Mia is likable for the most part, I felt sorry for her and was rooting for her to find out about her past-and I had my suspicions about happened. It seemed kind of obvious as time went on, but I was only partly right. There's a nice twist that stirs the pot a bit and as time goes on I thought Mia was a bit naive- I thought she should have suspected certain things more. But early on I thought her portrayal was spot on- I don't know what it would be like to lose your memory, but I thought the author did a realistic job showing that.

The reactions of those around her, the police behavior- I thought all that made sense. And I especially liked how Mia and her boyfriend Piers were portrayed- it seemed realistic given the circumstances. I had a few issues again with how Mia looked at things towards the end- it seemed like she got more gullible than I would have thought- but other than that this had my attention and it was a fast read. A nice psychological thriller- it's been compared to The Girl On The Train in the marketing push and I thought this was better. I would probably give this 3.5 stars and if you like a story with suspense and surprises this is a good choice.

  2. I can see why this was a bit of an impulse buy. Look at that gorgeous cover! I'm not sure if I've heard of this one, but it sounds great. Too bad she was a bit gullible at the end. That drives me nuts in books. Still this one sounds like a win! Excellent review!

    1. That cover is awesome. She was a bit naive at the end I thought, or towards the end more accurately- but then the twist hits. Wow.

  7. I really enjoyed this book, but I don't think comparing it to The Girl on the Train did anything to sum this book up. Great review!

  9. The cover caught my eye too and I like the premise. I think sometimes with these type of books you have to suspend belief a little - the main character always takes too much at face value I think....but if they didn't where would the story be?

  11. This sounds interesting. I haven't gotten around to reading any of the popular thrillers that publishers like to compare books like these to lately (i.e. Girl on the Train and Gone Girl).

  14. I was interested in this one. But what did you rate The Girl On The Train, if you thought this book was better but only gave it a 3.5? -- Lauren @ Obsessive Book Nerd

  17. It's awesome when an impulse buy turns out to be a good one. The premise really does sound interesting. It's neat when a twist stirs things up a bit. And I am glad things seemed realistic.
