Cover Characteristics CYOA

Cover Characteristics is a meme by Sugar and Snark- every week a characteristic is selected and we post 5 books with that week's theme.

This week's pick- Choose Your Own Adventure

This week is another rogue topic as the official topics are on hiatus. So I decided to go with the Choose Your Own Adventure books. I was actually doing last weeks post and used a few of the CYOA books, and it got me thinking- why not highlight some of the best covers? Best being subjective of course- here are my picks for favorite CYOA covers. Enjoy!

Time travel right off the bat and I wish I had some fun anecdotes to share but I hardly remember it...

This one could be fun.

The Phantom Submarine (Choose Your Own Adventure, #26)

I like this cover a lot, it may even be my favorite.

I don't think I ever read this one either, but it looks fun.

BONUS

This post over at Quirk books from a couple years ago had some great suggestions for books that would make a great CYOA. Here are a few.

  1. I used to love these books! I don't think I've read any of the ones you've got here though. I had fun reading Neil Patrick Harris's choose your own adventure autobiography. Leave it to him to take something like an autobiography and make it hilariously unique.

  2. I absolutely adored these growing up! And how cool are these covers? I couldn't for the life of me decide on which one I liked best -- they're all so unique! I lol-ed so hard at the P&P cover!

  3. I remember reading Choose Your Own Adventure when I was in grade school and loving them. They have some reboots and I tried to read them with my kids but they didn't work to well. That HG cover is funny.

  4. Okay, the irony about The Hunger Games one? The cover is REAL. How sad is that? Also, I would buy that book. Obviously. I always loved these books, but I always got mad at whatever adventure I chose. I always had to read all the options, of course, that was the best part ;) I like the submarine cover too- and the balloon one looks extra quirky! Great choice for covers, these are fabulous!

  5. I love that you bought one to read recently lol. I'm kind of tempted to do that myself just for nostalgia's sake, though I feel like they weren't even all that great when I was a kid, it was just fun seeing all the different outcomes, so I can only imagine how lacking they would seem now.

I like the underwater covers the best, but By Balloon to the Sahara looks like it's got some really weird shit going on in that story, haha. Aliens? A dog? A submarine (in the desert)?

I'm pretty sure I saw a giveaway recently for a Romeo & Juliet CYOA. That seemed fun lol.

    1. I was all excited about it. :) It was kind of a letdown though, like you say- still for nostalgia sake it wasn't bad. I remember they used to piss me off because they almost always killed you!

Ha ha Balloon to the Sahara looks whacked! And I like the underwater ones too. Mystery of the Maya isn't bad.

A romeo and Juliet CYOA, now THAT would be interesting.

  6. I have never read one of these. How do they do books like P&P and The Hunger Games?

    1. I don't think they do, I think that was just a joke. Although if they could license those properties into CYOA how cool would that be? :)

They're fun but they kill you off too often so they can be irritating. But they were a product of their time and kinda fun. :)

    2. Companion stories to the Hunger Games would be cool.
