Cover Characteristics Science Fiction/ Fantasy Covers

Cover Characteristics is a meme by Sugar and Snark- every week a characteristic is selected and we post 5 books with that week's theme.

This week's pick- Science Fiction/ Fantasy

This week I'm looking at science fiction/ fantasy covers that I think are kinda cool. I couldn't find a lot for the official topic (flags) and I've had a few of these covers around for a while, waiting for the right time- so we'll do it this week. These are a mix of old and new.

DuneDestiny's RoadThe Renegades of Pern (Pern, #10)Time Salvager (Time Salvager #1)The Sky People (Lords of Creation, #1)Green (Green Universe #1)The Silmarillion (Middle-Earth Universe)

I just like this one for the space backdrop.

Dune

This one is a classic even though I don't actually care for the story. I do like this cover version with the view and two figures traversing the dunes.

Destiny's Road

I haven't read this but I'm curious about the premise. And the cover art is awesome- can't really get the full effect from the book, but I've included the art below. This might be my favorite- full version at the bottom of the post.

This is set in the far future and it's got a great cover.

Time Salvager (Time Salvager #1)

This one is a bit newer but I've always liked the art on this

The Sky People (Lords of Creation, #1)

This is my kinda book with a cover like that- a crashed ship, a Venusian landscape and dinosaurs?

Switching gears now to fantasy- this is the redesigned cover to the middle book of Memory, Sorrow and Thorn.

Green (Green Universe #1)

I like this one for the perspective and the green juxtaposed with the red fruit. Plus an assassin (?) hanging upside down is just kinda cool.

The Silmarillion (Middle-Earth Universe)

This may be my other favorite- love this artwork.

  1. My first thought was that your topic is so broad I would have an aneurysm trying to choose just ten lol.

You know I love that cover for Green since it's a Dan dos Santos, plus it's got pomegranates on it! And I have a pomegranate obsession.

I really like those Ari Marmell covers too. I love the black and white contrast and all the blank space works really well. And they're just really pretty in general. Actually I'm gonna go look up them up because they look interesting.

    1. It was very broad, and I was worried about that myself. I have a list of topics and this wasn't one, it just happened. :)

I like Green too, and I figured that was a DdS cover. Just has his look. And those are pomegranates? I didn't know

I liked those covers too- exactly about the black and white. A nice contrast, at first I thought it would look better with a city in the background but then i thought, no it looks good the way it is.

    2. Trust me. I know pomegranates lol. (They have a little "crown" thing.)

  2. I like the Dune cover as well. The simplicity is really appealing. The Tolkien cover is gorgeous. I know it's showing my massive lack of science fiction knowledge but somehow I really didn't know Tolkien wrote things other than the Lord of the Rings/Hobbit books. I also really like the cover for Green. It makes me want to know more about the story.

    1. I like that Dune cover a lot. It is very simple but understated - it's funny I read it once and it bored me to tears, it's a science fiction "classic" but I wasn't impressed.

Tolkien did write some other things but it was mostly LoTR, the Silmarillion was like his history of that world. It's not as user friendly in my opinion. His other stuff is mostly scholarly or short stories/ poems, that kinda thing.

  3. Some of these a cool. I prefer more sleek covers like Stone of Farewell. I don't know why, and this is going to sound odd, but covers like Renegade of Pern make me feel weird. lol.

    1. I don't thin it's weird, covers affect everyone differently. I do like covers like that that are sleek or simpler, without all the busyness of a more cluttered cover lol.

  4. I like the Anne Mcaffery cover. She has some really good covers, but I haven't tried the series yet!

  7. Flags were hard again. I would have thought there would be a lot on science fiction/space covers though. Fun topic instead!
