Sunday Post #115

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer

This week has been blustery and cold- just in time for trick or treat day. The wind has been blowing, the leaves are flying around, the branches are bare- mostly anyway. It definitely feels like late fall. I like the stark nature of it, it has its own beauty, even as I miss the warm temps. I've also been enjoying all the October-y stuff going on around the blogosphere- this month is so fun.

SciFi Month starts on Sunday, you can check out a spreadsheet here that shows all the posts coming up for the month. There's fifty participants as of I'm writing this, and the upcoming posts look great. If last year was any indication, this should be an awesome month.

Last week I read Illuminae which seems to be getting rave reviews. I have to agree it's pretty good- I'll be reviewing it later in November. I also wrote a short tale about two cats and some rather unusual visitors- you can find that here.

SciFi Month runs all through November- you can check out the details here. #RRSciFiMonth and @SciFiMonth.

  1. The Incident on the Bridge is on my TBR. It looks intriguing. We're a little behind you here weather-wise. Our leaves have just started to turn and while it's pretty I'm not sure I'm ready for the falling temps! I'll be curious to see what you read for SciFi Month. I'm not a big scifi reader but I've actually enjoyed all the ones I've read and am looking for recommendations. Have a great week!

    1. It's funny, I'm all geeked for Sci Fi but I haven't been reading a ton of sci fi lately- I seem to enjoy the dystopian and YA sci fi more than, say, traditional sci fi or the older stuff. It just doesn't appeal to me as much. I did read Illuminae, which is getting raves, it's YA and quite intense.

I was looking at my favorite post for later in the year and I was surprised to see only one sci fi on there. I'm reading more mysteries and even contemporaries, which I never used to. I will say I think the ebst sci fi right now is in the YA section, surprisingly.

  2. Sounds like Halloween weather. :) It's a little warmer here and there are still leaves on the ground but the trees are starting to look bare.

I'm looking forward to your Sci Fi month posts; it should be a good month.

    Happy Halloween!

    1. It rained all day today, a pretty soggy Halloween! Didn't get a ton of kids... it's been blustery all week, definitely feels like end of Oct.

I think SciFi Month will be nice, but as I was replying to Katherine above, I'm not actually reading a ton of sci fi right now. Most of my Month posts are other than reviews. Kinda surprised me... maybe I try urban fantasy. The usual stuff isn''t working for me...

    1. Hey Heather, happy Halloween to you too (even though you probably don't celebrate it- or do you?) Illuminae was a trip, I liked how intense it was and the whole megacorporation thing was kinda cool. Definitely different!

      Hope you have great week!

  4. I really like the cover of The Incident on the Bridge - very tempting.

I'm glad you liked Illuminae. It's not the sort of book I read, but I included it on a 'best reads' post I wrote for another blogger as so many people were raving about it!

  5. I wish I liked Sci-Fi...it sounds so tempting, but I haven't gone there yet.

Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting my blog. The first video, of the Top Five books of the year, was interesting. I tried to read a Neil Gaiman book, but just couldn't connect. Sigh.

  8. I am so looking forward to reading Illuminae myself, I've been lusting after that book for months already :)
The stark, kind of naked beauty of fall has gotten me swooning this pas week. Every single day showed some new changes to my surroundings, and it has been beautiful - some sunny days, some rainy days.
Have a fantastic week ahead and happy reading.

  9. Hi Greg,
I've been seeing that Illuminae everywhere recently! And yes, all excellent reviews. I'm definitely going to have to read it at some point... maybe when my tbr list is a bit more forgiving lol.
I hope you enjoy November's Sci-Fi month! I won't be taking part but it sounds awesome!
Autumn is my favourite season by far... it's just so beautiful. Yes, it's cold... but the colours are amazing and so is watching all the animals getting ready for winter.
    Have a great week,

  10. The autumn colors are in full blast here, but some trees are already losing their leaves. The cats sleep home now, it's warmer ! I haven't watched The returned (Les revenants) yet, nope, not even in French, but I plan to. I love season 2 of The 100 ! That Duracell commercial is great and I'd love to read Illuminae... Have a great fun week ;)

    1. Illuminae was unique, that;s for sure. I read it in e- book form which was fine, a lot of people said it might be hard t oread on a device so I wasn't sure, but it worked OK. I only had to turn it at odd angles a few times, LOL. I hope you like it.

  16. Our leaves are at their peak right now, I think. Our weather has been very changeable. Sometimes lows in the 30's, then the next night a low of 60. The highs are same--50's and then 70's. Looks like it continues next week. I really like the cooler nights.

You've got some great looking links I need to check out, Greg. I love the cover for At the Edge of Summer and the anthology has some good authors. I'll have to add those to my book list.

I'm looking forward to your sci-fi posts. These two this week sound very good.

  17. It's been cold here too but today it is warming up to the 60s and later this week it is supposed to be in the low 70s. I am glad for that! I wasn't ready to pull out my winter sweaters yet.

I want to read Illuminae. Glad to hear that you liked it. I love Amie Kaufmann's Starbound series.

  36. The bridge books stands out as in real life, one always wonders what really happened when something tragic happened. I guess it's because it's human nature to be curious and to want to know the facts that led up to such an event. I don't read sci-fi but kudos to you on being psyched out for it and representin'.
