Sunday Post #63 Frightfall is here!

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It's Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.

The leaves are starting to show a little color and the air has a bite to it- sure signs that October is very close. There are a lot of fun things going around in the blogosphere this time if year, including some readathons. The Frightfall readathon starts on Monday and runs all week. It's not too late to join if you want to read some frightful stuff this week! The details can be found at Seasons of Reading.

I'm still reading Insurgent and enjoying it, although it does seem like Tris and Four are spinning their wheels a bit. I'm also jumping into my Frightfall reads, and hoping to get through two books for that- although that probably won't happen.

I also joined Sci-Fi Month, hosted by Rinn reads and Oh, The Books. I have some book and movie reviews already planned out.

BLOGOSPHERE STUFF:

There's a fun new meme called ReadPlayBlog hosted by Happy Indulgence and Read Me Away. It's about gaming and books, discussions and game recommendations. Check it out!

Also Read Me Away has a nice review of Landline by Rainbow Rowell

Anna Carey explains why she wrote Blackbird in the second person. Worth a read since this caused a lot of controversy about the book.

Megan from Reading Away The Days had a nice guest post this week at Kimba;s Caffeinated Book Reviewer- Are You Ever Too Old To Read YA? Lots of great comments.

  1. Nice post, Greg! I do envy your Autumn weather and pumpkin farms, cider, donuts and hayrides! When we lived up northeast we always did that, also went apple picking and made applesauce and pie with them. My fave time of the year :)
SciFi November looks interesting, and if I don't have time to join up, I will still certainly check out folks' posts and see what's up. Enjoy!

  2. I found Insurgent a bit frustrating too, spinning their wheels is a good way to put it! And I hadn't realised why Blackbird was in the second person, not my favourite so I'm going to check out why it was done that way. Have a good week!

    1. Yeah, Insurgent started out okay but then it just sort of gets bogged down in the middle, seems like. They seem to go from faction to faction but not a lot happens- maybe the book is just too long.

I liked Anna Carey's reasons for writing it the way she did, even though it's still not my preferred POV it makes more sense why she did it, after I read that.

  3. The weather finally got a bit cooler here as well! I found Insurgent to be a bit disapointing after Divergent, which I loved. Have fun pumpkin hunting! We don't have things like that and hay rides over here, but it sounds like a great way to get into the fall mood.
I also signed-up for sci-fi november month, it sounds like so much fun and I am alreayd thinking about posts and authros to feature on my blog that month!

    1. I think I agree with you about Insurgent, I was expecting them to go outside the fence, which they did initially, but then they went back in and are just going from faction to faction, seems like. Not sure where this is all going, but I'll keep reading. :)

I'm excited about Sci Fi Month too, should be a blast.

  4. The cooler weather is so nice though we're having a warm up (80's this weekend). Pumpkins and hayrides and cider sound great. Sci-Fi November sounds great. I'm going to check it out! Have a great week, Greg.

    1. We're actually having a warmer weekend too... and then it cools off dramatically at night. Must be the last gasp of summer... :) I think the Sci Fi November will be a lot of fun. Thank you for visiting Jan.

  5. We're having a cooler week too which is nice. We have a field trip to the pumpkin patch with the Tornado's preschool class on Friday so it'll be nice not to be in shorts and tshirts! Enjoy your pumpkin picking and cider. Sounds like a lovely day!

  6. I love this time of year, even though it doesn't cool off much here. But today is supposed to be 78 and in the 80s tomorrow and Tuesday. Then it will be hot again, as the fair is opening and it always seems to be hot during fair time! LOL

Thanks for visiting my blog...and I'm feeling a little morose due to my youngest son and his wife leaving. They have always been close by, and he was handy building things, etc. Sounds like I had gotten dependent, right?

I am happy that my daughter is moving into their house, so that will feel like home for the holidays.

Enjoy your pumpkins and your books....

    1. I do too, and we're having a bit of a warm up this weekend, but the coolness will return son! I'm looking forward to the colors starting to really turn on the trees...

It will be tough not to be s oclose to family, I imagine... although it's nice your daughter is moning into their house. Those are hard transitions... and here's hoping you get to see them often and for the holidays, too. Have a great week!

  7. I LOVE it's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown!!! I either watch it with the family or alone (sometime they are noisy and I like to watch it in quiet) Lol

That Flash movie is hilarious now, my sister and I laugh about it all the time, it was so bad it was good :)

The leaves are changing colors here also but the weather this weekend was in the 80's so no picking anything this weekend. I love Apple Cider and can't wait to have my first cup of the season. Enjoy your day Pumpkin Hunting! and Have a great week Greg!!!

    1. I like the Charlie Brown specials, too. they just take me back to childhood, good memories and a simpler time. I like the Flash movie a lot, you're right it's so bad it's good! LOL. So many good lines too...

Apple cider, yummy. One of the things I look forward to most about fall... :)

  8. It sounds like a fun day at the farm! We'll be going on our annual trip to Apple Hill, which is area with apple growers but they also do pumpkins. I can't wait for the apple treats (especially apple donuts and caramel apples). Insurgent was frustrating at times but I can't wait to see what you think of the final book! I remember Flash Gordon and it was awful lol. Of all the 80's movies this really needs to be remade, it can be so much better, right? lol. Have a great week and have fun with the read-a-thon!

  9. Beautiful weather you're having and your day sounds lovely. I've been enjoying dipping apple slices in caramel, mmm.

I haven't read Insurgent or Blackbird but I might check out the article on the POV; those are usually interesting.

    1. That sounds very good! So much fun stuff this time of year.

I thought her reasons for writing Blackbird that way were interesting...it's still an interesting choice, but I understand better wh yshe did it now.

  10. Great books, Greg. My curiosity is really piqued by Blackbird, so I may be adding it to my TBR list when I find out more about it. Glad you're enjoying this glorious weather. It's a great time to be outdoors. Have a great week ahead and thanks for visiting my blog.

  11. I'm glad you're enjoying the glorious weather (at least it's been glorious here in Virginia; I hope it's been good in Michigan.) And oh! Cider and donuts! You're making my mouth water. I hope the cider starts showing up in stores around here soon, and it's time for me to start baking pumpkin bread. I already bought a pumpkin but I need some more and some Indian corn for decorating the porch. :-)

I'm off to check off your 13 Treasures review. The series sounds like fun.

    1. We're having a bit of a late summer surge here with the weather- it's beena beautiful weekend (mid to high 70's). Love cider this time of year, and donuts too if you can find just the right ones!

Mmm, pumpkin bread. Making me hungry... :)

  12. Our weather started to be fall-like, but today it turned back to summer.

Good luck with the Frightful readathon. If I wasn't so behind on my reviews, I would sign up. I love reading those type of books for the entire month of October.

    Have a great week!

Hope you have a great week ahead.

  13. I've noticed that the leaves are starting to turn here too. I enjoyed some apple cider but no donuts or pumpkins yet. I am planning to try a recipe for pumpkin muffins and pumpkin pancakes soon and I believe there is a trip to Tim Hortons in my future :)

I love It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. One of my favorite fall rituals is watching it at least once. I love it almost as much as A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Have a great week and have fun with Frightfall. Sounds like you have some good books lined up.

    1. I'm very fond of the Charlie Brown specials as well, especially Christmas but this one as well. Really sets the mood for this time of year, and I just love that imaginary world too.

Pumpkin muffins sound good and so does Tim hortons actually- I could go for a pumpkin pie latte! I love all that stuff this time of year. :)

  14. It's Spring here in Australia.... so all a bit different! I must admit though I love sci fi on TV and many of my fave shows fall into that genre, I'm not a big fan of the sci fi or fantasy novel. Am a little intrigued however by Blackbird!

    1. Blackbird so far is intriguing, and a short quick read too looks like. I'm hoping to get through it quickly and get a review up... Glad you guys are getting into the good weather, ours is going to get worse and worse from here on out for a while... :)

  15. I agree with your thoughts about Insurgent with Four and Tris spinning their wheels a bit, great way to put it. I look forward to reading your review.

    1. I'm making my way through it, hope to have the review up later this week or early next week. I'm liking it but at the same time all th angst and soul searching about whether she should tell Four this, or tell someone that, is irritating me. They are just kind of running in place...

  18. Hi Greg - Hope you had fun with your pumpkin hunting! I rather agree that Insurgent got lost at the end. I hope to read book 3 soon. The November Sci Fi event sounds fun and I hope to join along.

  19. The honeycrisp apples are delicious! Going to get pumpkins on Friday. I am sure there will be cider and donuts. Enjoy this beautiful weather.

  20. Yes they are. Cider and donuts... I'm not normally big on donuts, but this time of year- the right kind of donuts, with some nice cider,,, mmm. We had a heck of a weekend didn't we?

    Happy pumpkin hunting! :)

  21. I enjoyed Insurgent but it is a long time since I read it, it was the one I liked best out of the three. Pumpkin hunting sounds fun. And cider and donuts! We don't go in for Halloween like you do in the USA although the shops try to kid us into it. But it is our spring and pumpkins are not yet even planted!

  22. Hope the pumpkin hunting went well!
Good to hear that you're still enjoying Insurgent, it's been a while since I read it but I remember enjoy it. The tagline on Blackbird sounds really interesting, and I love the cover of Get Even - I hope you enjoy them both.
Hope you have a great week.

Have a great time at the pumpkin patch!!

  27. Hmm, I'll have to think what I might read that would qualify for Sci-Fi Month. It's not my usual genre. But Michael Faber's new book, the Book of Strange New Things, which is on my list for fall, features a minister going into space to preach to aliens . . . You think that would qualify?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That would definitely qualify! :) Sounds quirky and fun...

I don't actually read much sci fi myself lately, although I used to. Although some of my YA reads qualify as sci fi I guess... anyway thanks for stopping by, have a great week.

  28. Going to a pumpkin patch sounds like a great idea. It's a bit of a drive to get to a good one from here, but maybe I can talk the family into it this year. Enjoy!

  36. Oh Insurgent was good but fizzled for me after Divergent. With the so-so reviews of Allegiant, I have not bothered to finish the series.

I love the changing colors. I have never gone to a pumpkin farm so I hope I get to do that with my little guys before one heads back to school.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!
